North Liberty’s trail network extensions
Freshly tilled earth forms a path for the West Penn Street trail extension. The 8-foot-wide trail, one of three currently under construction in North Liberty, will span from Kansas Avenue to Alexander Way, and is expected for completion in early to mid-June. (photo by Cale Stelken)

NORTH LIBERTY– Cyclers, joggers and dog owners of North Liberty rejoice.
In the name of improving pedestrian accessibility, the city is currently in the process of adding three 8-foot-wide segments to its pedestrian trail network, with many more approved for development in the coming years.

West Penn Street

Perhaps the most critical addition currently underway, this trail will span from Kansas Avenue, link to the Penn Street pond trail and finally meet with the North Ridge Trail just east of Alexander Way. Completion is anticipated in early to mid-June.
The Penn Street trail will also tie in with the ambitious Ranshaw Way expansion currently underway, which will feature a 10-foot trail and a tunnel north of Cherry Street, to be completed as early as late 2018 but may continue into next year.

Alexander Way

Just north of Penn Street will be a trail segment bridging the gap between Penn Street and West 240th Street NE.

Scales Bend Road

The extension will span from Fox Valley Drive, loop around the pond and link to both sides of Pheasant Lane.

A one-lane closure is expected on West Penn Street during construction, but all other streets will not be affected.
The current 19 miles of existing trails will see an additional 27.9 miles of approved trails added to the network in the next few years. These include East Penn Street north of Penn Meadows Park; Kansas Avenue from the water tower to Penn Street; West Cherry Street from Ranshaw Way to the North Ridge Trail; West Zeller Street from Ranshaw Way to North Jones Boulevard; and St. Andrews Drive heading east from North Bend Elementary.
