Homecoming for the Bolts

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High School celebrated its Homecoming Week with a parade and Powderpuff Flag Football Game on Thursday, Sept. 26, ahead of Class 3A District 5 varsity football against rival Clear Creek Amana on Friday, Sept. 27.
The parade started on the Liberty campus, wound its way around the adjoining neighborhood and returned to campus with a cookout following. The Powderpuff game pitted senior girls against junior girls in flag football with varsity football players acting as their coaches.
The juniors struck first, scoring a touchdown for a 6-0 lead. However, senior Sushma Santhana made a long scamper down the seniors’ sideline to tie the game 6-6. The seniors pulled off a successful two-point conversion play, but under the rules of flag football, it counted the same as a point-after kick, and only gave them a slim 7-6 advantage. The juniors hit again just before the end of the first 16-minute half to lead 12-7 at halftime.
Liberty’s seniors scored twice in the second half for the 19-12 final.
Liberty’s junior and senior boys battled in a Powderbuff volleyball match the night before.
Liberty High has eschewed the tradition of a Homecoming King and Queen, instead only naming a Homecoming Court. For 2019 the Court consisted of Maison Allen, Scott Dill, Ella Johnson, Henry Krain, Rudy Nahra, Santhana, Kaleb Williams and Selena Wisner.
