IOWA CITY– The finishes were firm, even though the times were missing.
Electronic gremlins made individual times disappear from boys’ results at the Sept. 2 Bob Brown Invitational cross country meet in Iowa City. However, scores– derived by the order runners from each school crossed the finish line– did hold up.
For Solon, Carl Richey was the top runner, with the team finishing 11th.
The system did hold up for the girls. Freshman Kiersten Conway was the first Spartan across in the girls’ combined junior varsity (JV)/varsity 5-kilometer race. As a team, the girls finished third.
Richey was 33rd overall, among the 231 combined JV and varsity boys’ runners, pacing Solon for the second meet in a row. The Spartans opened their season Aug. 26 at Prairie. Jeremy Fopma, of Marion and ranked No. 1 in Class 3A, was the meet medalist.
Following Richey were teammates Payton Phillip, 50th in the displacement scoring system (which does not tally a team’s individual places after its scoring runners finish). Behind Phillip were Edward Richey (51), Ethan Kobler (58), Andrew Bransky (64) and Ryan Sears.
For the girls, Conway’s third-place overall finish was 21:12, 32 seconds faster than the season opener. The Bob Brown meet moves over the course at Kickers Soccer Complex; a mostly flat course, but with a couple sizable hills to climb. Monticello’s Paige Holub– a top-five finisher at state in Class 2A a year ago– was the girls’ winner in 20:30.
Backing Conway was a pack of Spartans... Erin Kerkhoff (23rd, 22:57), Sophie Nicol (24th, 22.57), Ella Düster (25th, 23.11) and Nicole Shafer (27th, 23.17). Close behind were teammates Piper Radcliffe (47th, 24.22), Saige Hauer (52nd, 24.34) and Ashley Stinocher (55th, 24.37). Kerkhoff, Shafer, Radcliffe and Stinocher posted times 20 to 40 seconds lower than their first trip of the season over the Prairie Invitational course.
Following a Tuesday meet, scheduled for Tipton, both teams head for the woods, at Atkins, for the Benton Invitational on Saturday. Varsity girls are set to go at 9 a.m. with the gun for the boys race sounding at 9:25 a.m.
