Cougars roar past Bolts

CR Kennedy cruises past Liberty girls, 50-35

CEDAR RAPIDS– The Liberty High varsity girls’ basketball team dropped to 2-14 on the season Tuesday, Feb. 4, on the road, as Cedar Rapids Kennedy roared past them, 50-35.
Sophomore Haley Napoli put the Bolts on the scoreboard first with a three-pointer, unfortunately for Liberty, it would be the only points of the first quarter as the Cougars pulled ahead, 12-3. Kennedy took a 31-13 halftime lead as Sam McPherson, Isabel Smith, Ava Meyer and Neshy Byrd fought to keep the Lightning in the game.
Liberty stormed back in the third, outscoring the Cougars, 14-8, but still trailed, 39-27, going into the final eight minutes. McPherson drained a three-pointer, while Meyer and Kennedy Daugherty put up a pair of baskets late in the period.
McPherson, a senior, led all scorers with 12 points.
Iowa City West High visits for a varsity girl-boy doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 14, with the girls tipping off at 6 p.m., and the boys following around 7:30 p.m. The Class 5A regional tournament opens on Wednesday, Feb. 19, with the semifinals on Saturday, Feb. 22, and the regional finals set for Tuesday, Feb. 25. The Iowa Girls High School State Basketball Tournament will be held Monday, March 2, through Saturday, March 7, at Wells Fargo Arena, in Des Moines.
