DeWITT– The Solon Spartans’ boys track and field team competed in the WaMaC Conference Super Meet at Central DeWitt High School and emerged as a team eighth in the 14-team field on Thursday, May 2. The Spartans scored 55.5 team points at the meet, bested by champion Marion with 95, Mount Vernon with 89, Clear Creek Amana with 87, Benton Community with 85, Williamsburg with 83, Vinton-Shellsburg with 63.5 and Center Point-Urbana with 61. South Tama (36), Central DeWitt (30), Beckman (29) Maquoketa (14), West Delaware (10), and Independence (3) completed the competitors.
The Spartans had several athletes finish in the top five of all WaMaC competitors.
Rocky Lensing hefted the shot 53-foot-2 1/2 to win the WaMaC shot put.
Two Spartans graced the podium in the discus, as Coal Flansburg captured silver honors with his throw of 160-5 and Hayes Diersen occupied the bronze position with a 150-4 hurl.
Adam Bock captured fourth best runner in the 100-meter dash, clocking a time of 11.51.
And, Thomas Brandt found himself fourth best in the WaMaC in both the 110-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles, clocking times of 16.26 and 58.58, respectively.
“The WaMaC Meet started with our throwing events setting the stage right away for us,” Head Coach Mark Sovers said. “The throwing events tend to put forth a positive challenge to our team to be at our best. The challenge comes in the form of duplicating their performance on the track. Rocky Lensing was conference champion in the shot put with a personal best throw of 53-2 1/2, Coal Flansburg was conference runner-up with a throw of 160-5 in the discus and Hayes Diersen was third in the discus with a throw of 150-4. The next highest finishers on the night were Adam Bock in the 100-meter dash with a personal record of 11.51, Thomas Brandt was fourth in the high hurdles (16.26) and fourth in the 400m low hurdles (58.58). The shuttle hurdle Team of Mason Stahle, Jackson Ryan, Brady Jeworrek and Thomas Brandt were sixth and just continue to invest and improve each week.”
The Spartans prepare for the state qualifier at Benton Community in Van Horne, starting at 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 9.
“The state qualifying meet is the only thing guaranteed when it comes to another opportunity to go out and compete and find out something new about yourself,” Coach Sovers explained. “The coaching staff of Coach Wymer, Coach Takes, Coach Williams and Coach Woods do an excellent job of valuing people and relationships. The athletes understand their identity and value is not tied to performance. We are going to enjoy the opportunity together to be at our best at the state qualifying meet and never let special moments go by without celebrating them.”
The state meet is May 16 through May 18 at Drake University in Des Moines, held on the Blue Oval, familiar to those who qualified for the Drake Relays earlier this year. Returning to the Blue Oval to compete for state is the culmination of all the coaching, character building, improvement and desires of the athletes.
It does not go unnoticed for the boys’ track and field team and its coaches.
“We always look forward to competing at state and representing Solon. We will have the opportunity to make this become reality with the investment in each other throughout the year,” Coach Sovers elaborated. “We look forward to the process and what lies ahead for us. Coach Wymer and the throwers are an excellent example of this year in and year out. The moment is never too big because the focus is on being the best version of who you are. With this comes as the end result of accomplishing the things you want to accomplish when you want to accomplish them.”
