Bolts overcome rough start to shock Golden Eagles

Liberty overcomes Dubuque Wahlert, 64-59

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High boys varsity basketball coach Stu Ordman summed up his team’s 64-59 win over Dubuque Wahlert very succinctly.
“Terrible start for Liberty. Lot of energy coming back.”
The Bolts knocked off the Golden Eagles Tuesday, Jan. 7, at home, snapping a two-game losing streak and posting their first win of 2020.
Wahlert ruled the first quarter, blazing their way to an 18-5 lead over the Lightning. The Bolts rallied back in the second, outscoring Wahlert, 23-15, but still trailed 33-28 at halftime. The Birds clung to a one-point lead, 48-47, going into the final period, which saw Liberty pulling ahead for the win.
Senior Andre Brandon poured in 17 points and made 18 rebounds to lead the Lightning. Junior Ira Hazeltine scored 14, 12 came from junior Ethan O’Donnell, and 10 from junior Kelby Telander.
The win improved Liberty’s record to 5-2 and dropped Wahlert Catholic to 2-5.
The Bolts visit City High on Friday, Jan. 17, for a girl-boy doubleheader starting at 6 p.m. (girls) and 7:30 p.m. (boys). The Bolts fell, 41-38, to City on Dec. 20. Linn-Mar visits Liberty on Tuesday, Jan. 21, with a 7:30 p.m. varsity start, and Iowa City West High visits in a girl-boy doubleheader on Friday, Jan. 24.
