Bolts fall victim to Trojan juggernaut

Strunk homers in West’s 8-3 win over Liberty

IOWA CITY– Iowa City West High closed out the regular season at 29-9 extending its win streak to nine in a row at the expense of new rival Liberty High with an 8-3 non-conference varsity win Monday, July 9, at West High.
The Trojans wasted no time making life difficult for their guests as they put three runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning. Lucas Karwal led off for West High with a double and his courtesy runner Austin West was driven home by a sacrifice fly from Braden Houston for an early 1-0 lead. Jason Strunk smacked a two-run homer over the left field fence to make it 3-0. West High struck again in the third with three more runs. Sophomore Ben “Mad Dog” Madden singled to load the bases before two runs were walked in.
The Bolts plated two men in the top of the fourth after Nolan Frey and Keian Secrist singled to get on base and Alec Boldt walked. Frey stole home to score Liberty’s first run of the ballgame and was followed shortly after by Secrist. West High made it a five-run lead in the bottom of the fourth as Jayson “Bobo” Barnes belted out an RBI double. Liberty’s final run came in the top of the fifth as Tyler Dahm scored and Barnes drove in West High’s final run in the bottom of the sixth.
Tyler Stern earned the win for the Trojans surrendering two hits and two runs (one earned) with one walk and six strikeouts through four innings on the mound. Connor Greer relieved Stern for the final three innings giving up two hits and one unearned run, with one walk and four strikeouts.
The Lightning put seven men on the mound in an effort to thwart the Trojans, Tyler White was charged with the loss after the first inning. White gave up four hits and three earned runs. Secrist pitched one inning giving up two hits and one earned run, walking one and striking out one, Cade Maras pitched one inning giving up one hit, Tyler Dahm spent one inning on the mound giving up two hits and one earned run, walking one and striking out one, and Ethan O’Donnell pitched one inning issuing one strike out. Zach Anderson threw 2/3 of an inning with one walk and one strike out and Isaac Bender pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up three hits and three runs (two earned), walking one and sending one man back to the dugout.
The Trojans put up a dozen hits total. Karwal, Ryan Cooper, Austin Curtiss and Barnes had two hits each for West High with a double for Karwall and Cooper. Nick Biancuzzo, Strunk, Chase Calderwood and Madden had one hit apiece with a homer for Strunk and a double for Biancuzzo.
The Lightning produced five hits from Frey (two), Dahm, Bender and Boldt with a double for Boldt. The loss dropped Liberty High to 10-20 overall ahead of a Friday, July 13, Class 3A Substate 5 District 10 quarterfinal against Washington (Iowa), in Fairfield. The Trojans faced Muscatine in a Class 4A Substate 6 first round game.
