Bigger, but not as Bitter

North Liberty’s Beat the Bitter concludes this weekend
Thomas Williams of North Liberty feeds his daughter Naomi a toasted marshmallow Sunday, Jan. 26, during the Fire and Ice event of the annual Beat the Bitter winter festival. A community bonfire was lit at Penn Meadows Park with marshmallows and sticks free for the asking.

NORTH LIBERTY– Beat the Bitter, a weeklong winter festival, opened on Friday, Jan. 25, and runs through Saturday, Feb. 1. The annual event started in 2016 and has continued to expand its offerings as a way to get families out of their homes in the middle of winter for fun and community fellowship. With only a slight breeze and temperatures in the low 30s, the weather was far less “bitter” than it was during last year’s Polar Vortex.
Activities include a “5k-ish Obstacle Course,” which was held on Sunday, Jan. 26, ahead of the annual “Fire and Ice” celebration, which featured a mini-carnival, fire eating and fire breathing by the Eastern Iowa Circus and a fireworks show.
Events this weekend include a Curling Tournament, “Kick Winter in the SnowBall” adult kickball tournament, and a Broomball Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 1.
