Spartans topple Fairfield in home opener Solon begins season with split at West Delaware

SOLON– Fans welcomed Solon’s varsity baseball team back to the diamond June 17 for a home opener against the Fairfield Trojans.
The Spartans made the most of six hits and five walks for a 9-3 win.
The victory moved Solon to 2-1 after starting the season with a doubleheader split with West Delaware June 15.
Junior Brayden Rickertson threw 4 1/3 innings on the mound, giving up four hits and two unearned runs while striking out four and walking three. Senior Sully Steen pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief, giving up an unearned run and a hit.
Solon started off the game with two runs manufactured in the home half of the first inning.
Rickertson allowed two base runners in the top of the second inning, but worked his way out of the jam. Fairfield’s Matthew Swanson reached after being hit by a pitch, but catcher Drew Turner gunned him down stealing second, with shortstop Brady Jeworrek applying the tag.
After giving up a double to Trojan Nate Smithburg, Rickertson struck out Fairfield’s Max Wheaton looking to end the inning.
The Spartans padded their lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, and after the Trojans broke through for two runs in the fifth, responded with four more in the home half of the inning.
Fairfield rang up the final run of the game in the top of the sixth.
Senior Cole Arduser had two hits and scored two runs for Solon, with two RBI from senior Nolan Pattison.

The Spartans started the season with a seventh-inning loss in Manchester against the West Delaware Hawks.
Solon trailed much of the game after the Hawks built a 3-0 lead after two innings.
The Spartans came up with two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to tie the game, but West Delaware came up with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh off reliever Sully Steen.
Senior Lucas Walker struck out seven and walked one while giving up three earned runs on two hits over six innings.
Cole Arduser had a double, an RBI and a run scored for the Spartans. Incoming freshman Brett White and Nolan Pattison each had a hit and an RBI. Solon drew nine walks.
Solon picked up a split in the nightcap, a 3-1 win.
Juniors Jake Van Roekel, Jacob Smith and Drew Turner combined to limit the Hawks to four hits and a single unearned run while striking out nine and walking four.
West Delaware’s lone run came in the bottom of the fifth and broke a scoreless deadlock.
It wasn’t until the top of the seventh that the Spartans broke through against West Delaware’s Luke Kehrli. Sophomore Kinnick Pusteoska, freshman Blake Timmons and courtesy runner Brayden Rickertson scored for Solon, with RBI to Brady Jeworrek and Pattison.
