Barkers lead the way for the Clippers

CCA runs in CR Prairie’s Invitational

CEDAR RAPIDS– A brother and sister duo led the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers Saturday, Aug. 31, at Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Cross Country Invitational Meet, the first of the season for the Clippers.
Brandon Barker, a junior, won the varsity boys race (Orange Division) in 17:03.3, and was seventh overall. The Creek Boys were second in the Orange Division, being bested by one point in a tiebreaker by Marion (48-49), and eighth overall.
Haidyn Barker, a freshman, was fourth in the Orange Division with a time of 21:00.3, and 14th overall. The Creek Girls were eighth in the Division, and 18th overall.
“It was a good season opener for us,” CCA boys coach Ben Robison said. “We really attacked it like a dress rehearsal or a time-trial. We are going to continue to train through these first three or so weeks, and we are going to be really conservative with guys running (or not-running) with any type of injury. Regardless, we saw some really good stuff this morning, and I think we are definitely going to have 10 guys in the mix to fill seven varsity spots! I am really pleased with how some of our younger guys handled the large field size and solid competition.”
Prairie’s meet, he said, “is kind of a trial-by-fire right out of the gate. If that's how we fared under the circumstances, I'm really excited to see how the season comes together for us!”
The girls’ and boys’ squads will run in Iowa City Regina Catholic’s Bob Brown Invitational on Thursday, Sept. 5, at the Iowa City Kickers’ Complex, starting at 5 p.m.
