Fundraiser for Jason Allen to be held Sunday, August 22.
SOLON- Being born with cystic fibrosis is a little like playing the game of Life after being dealt an unfavorable hand of cards.
When Jason Allen, a Solon High School graduate, was diagnosed with the genetic disease as a 4-year-old, doctors told his parents not to expect him to live much past the age of 18.
Now 28, Allen has already beaten those odds, but he has spent much of his 20s on disability and living in and out of hospitals, fighting a disease that affects all the major organs in his body. Insurers are hesitant to cover cystic fibrosis patients given their short life spans, so expenses have piled up. His condition makes it impossible to hold down a job. Now he has to be on oxygen 24 hours a day, and is forced to rest when walking up flights of stairs.
With his lungs now at 20 percent effectiveness, if nothing else were to be done, it would be a slow, lingering wait for the end.
"What he gets from disability isn't even enough where he can live on his own," said his father, Jeff Allen. "For people with cystic fibrosis, you're just slowly going down hill"
However, there is hope for a better life- an almost normal life- for Jason.
But it will take a new set of lungs.
Jason is now on the donor waiting list for a lung transplant that could improve both the quality and length of his life. Even though he will have to take anti-rejection drugs for the rest of his life for his body to accept new organs, it will be a marked improvement.
Still, even if all goes well with the transplant, which will performed at a specialized hospital in St. Louis, he will need enough money to live on his own in that city for three months.
That's where the community comes in.
This Sunday, August 22, renowned blues musician Joe Price and his wife, Vicki, will perform for the public during a fundraiser on behalf of Allen from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Timber D.O.M.E. Lodge at Solon's Recreation and Nature Area.
There will also be a silent auction during the event, featuring roughly 100 items, including an autographed guitar by famed Iowa musician Greg Brown, a seven night stay at Tim Dwight's condo in Kauai, Hawaii, donated photo shoots, food, auto services, sport memorabilia and more. And, for the football fan in audience, there will even be a pair of hard-to-get tickets for this year's Iowa versus Ohio State football game.
Jeff, who has been organizing the event with his wife, Sal, and several family friends, said he hopes to see more than 100 people at the event to raise a minimum of $10,000 to help his son with his living expenses. His pitch for would-be attendees is simple.
"Show up, donate and have fun," Jeff said. "It should be a good time for everyone"
The event is open to the public, with a $20 suggested donation for adult entrance and complimentary beverages, and a suggested $10 donation for children up to age 13.
The entrance fee also includes the cost of the meal that will be served at the event. Donating their time and food to the event will be Savvy Coffee & Wine Bar, Smitty's Bar & Grill, the Great River Brewery and Sam's Main Street Market.
Jeff said he and Sal, well known in town as the former owners of Stone City Brewery, have been touched by the community support.
"It makes me feel really good that people want to help and give Jason a chance at a good life," Jeff said.
Jeff and Sal have been putting hours every day into organizing the event so far, with Sal taking time off work to gather items for the auction. But the event has given the family something to focus on while waiting for a potential donor that is certain to come-eventually.
Jeff said when news comes that a donor is available, the family will have to drop everything and rush Jason to St. Louis. Once there, they will be informed of the risk of the transplant and asked to make a quick decision if they should proceed.
It will be a risky gamble with potentially fatal consequences, but taking the risk could win Jason his life back.
"He has everything to gain," Jeff said. "With the transplant it should hopefully turn the tables so Jason can lead more of a normal life"
Donations are now being accepted for silent auction items. For more information on donating or the event, call Jeff or Sally Allen at 624-1308 or find information on the Facebook page for their nonprofit, called Breathe-N-for Jason.
