Bluder scores 21 first-half points against Mustangs

SOLON– It’s easier to win when your opponent doesn’t score.
Solon’s varsity boys’ basketball team racked up 16 steals and forced Independence into 29 turnovers in a lopsided 73-39 victory at home to close out 2020 Tuesday, Dec. 22.
The Spartans have rolled up six straight victories since opening the season with a 61-56 loss at Central DeWitt and now sit at 6-1 (4-0 in the WaMaC Conference East Division).

IC West’s combined bowling teams fall to CR Kennedy in season opener

IOWA CITY– Iowa City West High’s combined (with bowlers from Liberty High and Clear Creek Amana (CCA)) girls and boys bowling teams opened the 2020-2021 season Friday, Dec. 18, at home against Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
The Cougars swept the Trojans, with the varsity boys falling 2,938 to 2,505, the junior varsity (JV) boys falling 2,593 to 2,084, and the varsity girls falling 2,341 to 2,044. Kennedy did not bring a JV girls squad, which led to something of an inter-squad scrimmage.

Liberty boys power past CR Prairie for 68-62 win

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High’s varsity boys battled back from an early deficit to take a 68-62 season-opening win Friday, Dec. 18, at home over the visiting Prairie Hawks from Cedar Rapids Prairie.
Ira Hazeltine, a senior, put Liberty on the scoreboard for an early 2-0 lead, but a three-pointer from Prairie showed the Bolts the contest would be a tough one. Prairie went on to take the first period 20-13 with seniors Ethan O’Donnell, Kelby Telander, and Grayson Tyler, and junior Max Beckman putting up points for Liberty.

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High’s varsity girls were finally able to hit the floor to open the 2020-2021 season Friday, Dec. 18, at home as Cedar Rapids Prairie visited. However, the evening was spoiled for the Lightning as the Hawks soared to a 61-45 win.

INDEPENDENCE– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys basketball team improved to 3-2 on the season handing the Independence Mustangs a season-opening loss Tuesday, Dec. 15, in the Mustangs’ corral.
Indee galloped out to a 15-8 lead at the end of the first period, but a 23-point barrage by the Clippers led to a 31-28 halftime advantage. The Mustangs kept the game close, trailing the Creek Boys by six points at the end of the third as CCA led, 49-43. The Clippers put up a 16-point effort in the final eight minutes holding their hosts to only six points for the 65-49 win.

Clubb leads CCA with 12 points in 62-24 win over Independence

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity girls’ basketball team improved to 4-1 on the season shelling the Independence Mustangs, 62-24, on Tuesday, Dec. 15, at home.
The Clippers pounded Indee, 18-2, in the first period and built a 29-8 lead at halftime. A 17-point barrage by the Creek Girls ensued in the third period for a 46-15 advantage with a 16-point onslaught in the final eight minutes.
Calia Clubb led all with a dozen points and dominated the boards with 10 rebounds. Emily Sly and Ava Locklear produced 11 points each with 10 from Morgan Etscheidt.

Spartans take down Indians

Solon edges Marion, blows out No. 3 Camanche late

SOLON– Chalk up two more quality home wins, both against Indians.
Solon’s varsity boys’ basketball team pulled out a 49-48 thriller against Marion then clamped down on Camanche (third-ranked in Class 2A) Saturday, Dec. 19, for a 68-44 win.
For Camanche, it was the first loss of the season.
The Spartans won the game in the final period.

After eight years, Lady Spartans best Marion, 55-43

SOLON– “Marion is Marion,” said Lady Spartan Head Basketball Coach Jamie Smith.
For the first time since the Solon girls’ varsity basketball team defeated the Marion Indians, 64-50, on Feb. 13, 2013, the Lady Spartans summited that lofty precipice again.
The Lady Spartans bested the defending WaMaC East Division champion Marion Indians, 55-43, on Tuesday, Dec. 15, at home. It was Solon’s third straight win since opening the season 1-2, and includes a win over 3A’s fifth-ranked Center Point-Urbana, catapulting them to the top of the East Division standings with a 4-1 record.

Lady Spartans trample Trojans, 63-24

SOLON– The Lady Spartans varsity basketball team continued its win streak on Thursday, Dec. 17, at home, trampling the South Tama Trojans, 63-24.
The Lady Spartans took to the court with a different swagger on Thursday against the Trojans, shooting with confidence and maintaining the defense that provided them with their Tuesday win over the Marion Indians.
Solon shot out to a 14-4 lead by the end of the first quarter and held the Trojans to single digits with a 29-9 halftime lead.

Dual wins against Clinton and Maquoketa

FORT MADISON– Solon crowned two champs and came away with fourth place at a crowded Fort Madison Invitational Dec. 19.
Hayden Taylor (160 pounds) and Gage Marty (220) captured first place, while Lucas Kampman (170) took second and Caleb Ebert (152) came in third.
Dubuque Hempstead walked away with the team title, rolling up 248.5 points. From there, it was the best of the rest with Cedar Rapids Kennedy a solid second with 169.5 and Burlington Notre Dame third with 145.5.
The Spartans’ 141.5 points edged out host Fort Madison (141) for fourth.

Christian Withrows 28 points lead CCA past Maquoketa, 62-59

MAQUOKETA Senior Christian Withrow led the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys past the Maquoketa Cardinals with 28 points in a 62-59 WaMaC West versus WaMaC East contest Tuesday, Dec. 8, in Maquoketa.
The Clippers trailed the Cardinals throughout the contest as Maquoketa won the first period, 23-14, and held a 39-27-halftime advantage. The Creek Boys battled back in the third quarter but still trailed the red birds by four points, 47-43, going into the final period.

CCA girls fall 59-44 to Grinnell

TIFFIN Clear Creek Amanas (CCA) varsity girls suffered their first loss of the season Thursday, Dec. 10, at home as the Grinnell Tigers defeated them 59-44 in a non-conference contest. The Tigers were ranked No. 8 in class 4A while the Clippers were the 14th-ranked squad.
