Solon alum Sydney Lawson batting in the Big Ten

CORALVILLE– Former Solon Lady Spartan Sydney Lawson, daughter of Gene and Christine Lawson from Solon, is swinging the pine in the Big Ten this season.
The Wisconsin Badgers visited the University of Iowa Softball field in Coralville for three games in two days– a doubleheader held on Saturday, April 7, and the final game Sunday, April 8.
Although the Badgers did not fair well against the Hawkeyes, falling 3-0, 4-3 and 5-3 in the three games, attendees got an opportunity to see the Solon High School graduate play in her Big Ten debut on Sunday and get her first Big Ten hit.

Robert Neustrom-Born to be a Hawkeye

Hawk Talk

Robert Neustrom’s story starts in the 1930s on the family farm in northwest Iowa, 10 miles southeast of Moville, when Bob Neustrom, Robert’s grandfather, would listen to Iowa football on WHO.
Bob’s favorite player was Ozzie Simmons, a break-away running back from Texas, who starred for the Hawkeyes from 1934-1936.
Flash-forward to 1962 when Bob, his two sons Tom and Bobby, plus Uncle Bob Thomas and son Barry would load up the 1956 Oldsmobile and drive to Iowa City Saturday morning to watch the Hawkeyes play.

Girls take WaMaC East track title

State track qualifier at home Thursday, May 11

SOLON– The midfield celebration was loud… but short… as Solon’s girls raised their WaMaC Conference East Division trophy May 7. They walked away with a 37-point win on their home track. But they also realize the hard work continues. Their Thursday task– the Class 3A state qualifying meet, also at Solon– is to advance as many events as possible to the 2018 state track meet, May 17-19 in Des Moines.

Noonan kick beats Maquoketa in shoot-out

Senior Night Friday against Vinton-Shellsburg

SOLON– The Solon Lady Spartans soccer team started a week of very physical play in Maquoketa winning an edge-of-your-seat battle, 3-2, only to fall prey to Central DeWitt, 3-1, battling with a lineup lacking several starters due to high school state large group music competition.

Spartans dodge OT bullet from Sabers

SOLON– The boys took care of business at home against Maquoketa in a shutout, but narrowly escaped the Central DeWitt Sabers on the road.
Solon’s varsity soccer team improved to 11-3 with the two wins last week, defeating Maquoketa’s Cardinals 4-0 at Spartan Stadium May 1 and squeaking out a 3-2 overtime victory visiting Central DeWitt May 3.
The Spartans, currently ranked second in Class 1A by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association, will square-off with the top-ranked team, Iowa City Regina, in Iowa City May 10.

We look forward to challenging each other to use our gifts and talents in a different ways to help in our team success,” Coach Mark Sovers commented.

Trojans give Prairie Hawks their first loss

West’s Frisbie scores in double OT, 2-1

CEDAR RAPIDS– The Iowa City West High varsity Trojans handed Cedar Rapids Prairie its first loss of the season on Monday, April 30, at Prairie’s John Wall Stadium with a 2-1 win in sudden death overtime (OT).
The win dipped the Prairie Hawks to 7-1 and improved West’s record to 8-3.
Prairie struck first with a long-ball goal in the 30th minute by Matthew Walter. Shortly after, Gada Ambo tied the match with a cross kick from the right side into the back corner of the Prairie net. A stalemate ensued through the rest of the first half and all of the second half leading to overtime.

2018 CCA softball preview

Still young, but more experienced

OXFORD– Last year the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity girls softball team faced two challenges. First, Matt Trosky took the helm of the program in the wake of the departure of Barb Lynn after three seasons. Lynn returned to coaching the Iowa City West High varsity this year. And second, they were a young team with only two seniors (Claire Navara and Abbi Kinnaird), and a freshman (Raina Henze) and eighth grader (Peyton Graft) pitching. The Creek Girls finished the season at 14-26.

Liberty girls fall, 3-0, to CV Christian

ALBURNETT– As storms crept ever closer, the Liberty High Lightning fell, 3-0, to the 15th-ranked team in Class 1A, the Huskies of Cedar Valley Christian (CVC). The Huskies, a shared program between CVC and Alburnett High School, brought a 9-0 record into the Tuesday, May 1, contest in Alburnett. The Bolts, unranked by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, were 2-5.

Hawkeyes go in NFL draft

There are two reasons I watch the NFL draft.
One is to see where the Iowa Hawkeyes go and two is to see who the Chicago Bears pick.

It seems that this happens more times than not but the pre-draft “experts” are usually picking at least one or two Hawkeyes to go in the first round.
Last year Desmond King, a two-time All-American and winner of the Jim Thorpe award as a junior, was projected to go high in the draft.
Desmond dropped all the way to the fifth round, picked by the Los Angeles Chargers with the 151st selection.
