Aydan Wynos also won a major decision, 10-1, over Tanner Heeren. West’s varsity prevailed by a slim 29-27 margin to win the dual while the junior varsity (JV) crew fell, 36-34.

Iowa’s shotgun deer season preview

By Joe Wilkinson
Iowa Department of Natural Resources
DES MOINES– Iowa deer hunters likely stepped out into single-digit cold Saturday, the opener for the first shotgun season. That’s closer to typical weather than the balmy 30s and 40s the previous weekend. What better way to kick off the 60th anniversary of Iowa’s deer season, than by stocking up on hand warmers?

Women Go 2-0

Hawk Talk

By Don Lund
Sports Writer

Iowa’s women won two games last week and now have won six in a row.
The Hawkeyes picked up a big 97-91 win over 22nd-ranked Syracuse Thursday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
When I take pictures at Iowa games I usually sit under the basket that the Hawks will be shooting at in the first half.
That is also closest to the visitors’ bench.
When I saw the Syracuse players lined up at their bench I noticed a lot of size, length and depth.
They played 10 players and were 8-0 coming into Carver.

Hawkeye men with big win over Irish

The Hawkeye men are 9-1.
They opened with a big 98-93 win over Notre Dame last week at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
A really good back-and-forth game with the Hawks holding on.
Great shooting from the floor (57 percent), from 3-point range (54 percent) and from the free throw line, where the Hawkeyes were 25-28.
How about Iowa’s bench and the crowd?
The Fighting Irish had a seven-man rotation and Iowa went 10 deep.
In the first half, the Hawks had nine players score… none of them in double-figures.

Hawkeyes are going bowling

Iowa will be playing LSU in the Outback Bowl on Wednesday, Jan. 1, at noon.
The LSU Tigers, ranked 15th in the nation, finished the season 9-3. That includes a win over Auburn, which is playing in the BCS championship game.
The only time Iowa has ever played LSU was in the Capital One Bowl in 2005. Drew Tate found Warren Holloway for a 56-yard game-winning touchdown with time running out and Iowa won, 30-25.
Also congratulations to James Morris for being named Capital One First Team Academic All-American.

Wrestlers escape, 22-19

The Hawkeye wrestlers traveled to Edinboro last week and had to come from behind to stay undefeated.
Top-ranked Tony Ramos lost 3-2 at 133 pounds, Josh Dziewa was pinned at 141, Brody Grothus lost a major at 149 and Tomas Lira was pinned at heavyweight.
Iowa countered with six wins, including majors at 125 by Thomas Gilman, Derek St. John at 157, Mike Evans at 174 and Sammy Brooks at 197.
“We made it hard on ourselves, but we also had guys that wrestled hard,” said Iowa head coach Tom Brands. “Battling back for the dual win is a testament to their toughness.”

Spartans off to 2-0 start

Solon wins at Western Dubuque and hosting CP-U

SOLON– It was a hard-fought win to open the season.
Solon’s varsity basketball team traveled last week to Western Dubuque at Epworth and came away with a 59-52 win.
“We expected a pretty good punch and we got it,” said head coach Brad Randall of the road win. Led by junior Spencer Haldeman, Western Dubuque came into the game highly regarded, Randall said, but the 2013-14 Solon squad proved troublesome for the Epworth team’s offense.

First win for girls comes against Demons

Alex Henry 3-pointer gives Lady Spartans the lead with 5 seconds

SOLON– The Lady Spartans earned their first victory of the young basketball season after a clutch Alex Henry 3-pointer completed a comeback win against the Washington Demons Saturday, 47-46.
Solon improved to 1-3, and the win helped erase the bad taste from the previous evening when the Lady Spartans let a fourth quarter lead slip away against Center Point-Urbana (CP-U).

Wrestlers win ‘em all at Cascade duals

CASCADE– The Solon varsity wrestlers opened their season with a sweep at the Cascade dual tournament held Friday, Dec. 6.
“Great start to the year,” commented head coach Brooks McLaren. “The kids performed well in the first competition of the year.”
Louis Gnida had four pins at 120 pounds, freshman Trevor Nelson (152) finished the meet undefeated with three pins. Cole Fritz (138) and Danny Whitmore (182) finished undefeated.

Clipper girls one and one

Clipper girls 10 points better than Independence

TIFFIN– The ship is back on an even keel. After a season-opening loss to Center Point-Urbana, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity girls battled the Mustangs of Independence for a 67-57 win Tuesday, Dec. 3, at home.
The Clippers took an early lead with a Kelsey Hall 3-pointer and led 11-2 before an end-of-the-first period rally by the Mustangs narrowed the gap to 11-8 in favor of CCA.
Emily Wieland opened the second period for CCA by scoring on a rebound, Molly Villhauer added a pair of baskets and Lauren Stopko nailed a 3-pointer. The Clippers enjoyed a 27-22 lead at the half.
