Lady Spartans win fifth in a row

SOLON– Rylee Smith shot only two free throws against Central DeWitt.
They came with five seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, and the Lady Spartans needed them to break a 37-37 tie.
Smith sank them both. They were the second and third point scored by Solon in the fourth quarter of a game which the Lady Spartans controlled in the first half, and almost let slip away in the second.
Solon’s girls defeated Central DeWitt, 39-37, last week at home, then traveled to Manchester Friday for a 53-35 thumping over West Delaware.

Road trips for the Hawks

Last weekend the Hawkeye men’s and women’s basketball teams traveled to Des Moines to take on the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) and Drake, winning both.
The Hawk men played the Panthers on Saturday, jumping out early and holding on, 80-73.
Last year, Iowa lost to both UNI and Iowa State, so this was a good win.
Devyn Marble and Mike Gesell were the one-two punch that knocked out the Panthers.
Devyn did it all last Saturday, playing 37 minutes, scoring 30 points with four rebounds, two assists and two blocks.

Clipper boys fall to Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers fell to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the WaMaC Tuesday night after the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings came to town, sacking and looting for an 83-57 win.
A Tony Pederson 3-pointer gave CCA a 10-9 lead in the first period, the only Clipper lead of the night. The Vikings took the quarter 17-10 and never looked back as the Clippers struggled to maintain possession of the ball.
A salvo of 3-pointers by Mitch Stopko, Konrad Moore and Kam Kahler in the second period helped the Clipper cause, but the home team still lagged behind 38-21 at the half.

Warriors edge out Women of Troy

IOWA CITY– Maybe if they’d just had a few more minutes to play.
Time was not on the Women of Troy’s side Friday night as both the sophomore and varsity squads came up short despite fourth-quarter rallies. The sophomores trailed most of the game, put up a fierce fight in the fourth, and fell, 39-34. Jessie Harder led the sophs with an 18-point effort.

Solon Lady Spartans handle Maquoketa, Anamosa

SOLON– After a 1-2 start, the Solon Lady Spartans have reeled off three straight wins.
Solon’s varsity girls hosted Maquoketa and Anamosa last week, outscoring their opponents 123-63.
After Tuesday’s home game against Central DeWitt, however, it’s five straight on the road, including a Dec. 18 matchup with No. 9 Western Dubuque.
“I am pleased with the progress of the team at this point in the season,” first-year head coach Tony Nicol said. “The transition into my system has gone more smoothly than I had expected.”

Solon takes down Maquoketa and Anamosa, remains undefeated

ANAMOSA– So far, so good.
The Solon Spartans remained undefeated in the young varsity basketball season last week, capturing wins on the road at Maquoketa and Anamosa, and entering the Associated Press high school poll, ranked No. 4 in Class 3A.
After two lopsided wins to start the season, the Spartans moved to 4-0 against an always pesky Maquoketa team and a surprising Anamosa squad.
“I like where we’re at,” said head coach Brad Randall. Solon has had four of its first five games on the road, and if the Spartans can win Tuesday at Central DeWitt, seven of the next nine will be at home.

CCA girls stun the Mustangs

MOUNT VERNON– A slow start Tuesday night turned into a big win for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers girls basketball team. The Clippers pulled-off a 47-45 win in overtime in the Lady Mustangs’ stable.
A dismal first period found the Clippers struggling, shooting only 1-11 from the floor, and trailing 8-2. CCA narrowed the gap to 3 points, but watched as the Mustangs galloped away on a 12-3 run late in the quarter. Mount Vernon had the 21-9 advantage at the halftime break.

Spartans roar out of gate

SOLON– You can’t ask for a much better start if you’re Solon head boys’ basketball coach Brad Randall.
The Spartans have made short work of two WaMaC West opponents.
Short as in the Solon team has run up double-digit leads in the first quarter against both Waterloo Columbus and Benton Community, and forced continuous clocks in both games.
Randall couldn’t remember the last time that happened.
“The down side is we haven’t played a complete game yet,” he said.
Tests against Maquoketa, which defeated Solon twice last year, and an improved Anamosa squad will be coming this week.

Lady Spartans fall to No. 3 Benton Community

SOLON– The No. 3 Benton Community Bobcats visited Solon for the Lady Spartans home opener Friday night. The Bobcats scored the first points and continued to lead the entire game, beating Solon 59-43.
Solon trailed by just seven at the half, but Benton kept the pressure on and by the start of the fourth quarter, the Bobcats led by 12.
The visitors nailed six 3-pointers for the night and played a disruptive defense.
Solon moved to 1-2 on the season with the loss. Benton Community went to 3-0.

Good start for Clipper girls

TIFFIN– Following a solid 52-34 win over West Delaware Tuesday night at home, Clear Creek Amana (CCA) coach Matt Haas was more introspective than celebratory.
“We’ve done some good things these first two games, obviously there’s some things we need to capitalize on and work on,” Haas said. The win moved the Clippers to a 2-0 start to the season, an improvement over the squad’s 1-1 record at this time last season.

Gustin named Solon head coach

SOLON– Solon Community School District Activities Director Keith McSweeney announced Tuesday that Peter Gustin will have the "interim" tag removed from his title as the head volleyball coach at Solon High School.
"Coach Gustin did a fabulous job this year and we couldn't have been happier with his performance," McSweeney stated in an email. "We have been impressed with Peter since the first time he walked through our doors, and we are even more confident in his abilities after observing him this season."

Lady Spartans hammer their way into state tournament

SOLON– When that last point fell against them, tears streamed down the faces of the Lady Spartans’ volleyball team.
They hugged, then they wiped their eyes and stood with the runner-up trophy in the center of the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
Solon, ranked No. 6 in Class 4A, had taken on the top three seeds in the tournament and had almost run the table, just running out of points to play against the No. 1 team, Charles City, in the 4A final Saturday in Cedar Rapids.
