Clipper football improves to 4-4 for the season

By Chris Umscheid
North Liberty Leader

TIFFIN– Football is a game full of statistics. For example, in Friday night’s contest between the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers and the Indians of Marion, the Indians had 287 yards of offense to CCA’s 269, and had the ball for just over 26 minutes to Creek’s 21 minutes of possession.
In the end, the most important statistic of the game was found on the scoreboard at the conclusion: CCA 21, Marion 7.

Clippers x-country runs at WaMaC conference meet

Boys finish 5th, girls end 12th

CENTER POINT– Jane Astor’s Clipper Cross-Country teams were in-action Thursday, Oct. 17, at the WaMaC conference meet hosted by Center Point-Urbana (CPU) at the Bob Bowers Athletic Complex.
The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys finished fifth in team points behind winner and conference champion CPU, Vinton-Shellsburg, Mount Vernon-Lisbon and Marion. Jack Murray again led the Clipper effort, bringing home a fifth-place finish in 16:49.

Great expectations

When your team wins 25 games, makes it to the finals of the NIT, returns four starters and has maybe the best depth ever, fans should be excited.
That’s why the Iowa fans are looking for a big season from the Hawkeye basketball team.
Last summer, Randy Larson, who runs the Prime Time basketball league, said Iowa had the best talent he’s seen in his 30 years of following the Hawkeyes.
Kirk Speraw, assistant basketball coach for the Hawkeyes, agreed.

D-fense!

Spartans hold Indians to 63 yards in 42-0 conference victory; Maquoketa up next

SOLON– After a shaky first quarter, Solon kicked it in gear.
At least that’s the way it looked as Marion came to town for a conference game on the gridiron Friday night.
Solon was plagued by penalties in the early going, but soon shook it off and rolled to a 42-0 blanking of the Indians.
The win moves Solon to 6-1 on the year, 4-0 in Class 3A District 6 and headed for a showdown on the road with co-leader Maquoketa this Friday.
The Spartan defense held Marion to 63 total yards for the game, and scoreless for the first time this year.

No conference title for Lady Spartans

Solon pushes past Mount Vernon, but West Delaware delivers first WaMaC loss

MOUNT VERNON– It was a rollercoaster ride for the Lady Spartans last week.
Solon dropped its first conference match of the year against West Delaware at Manchester Thursday, and that left the Lady Spartans in second place for the WaMaC East.
The Lady Spartans had two tough road games, and only came out on top in one.
The win came at Mount Vernon Tuesday night, a 3-1 conference win.

Good late season finish, tough road ahead for XC

TROY MILLS– After a fourth (girls) and eighth (boys) place finish at North Linn, Solon’s boys and girls cross country squads head into conference this week, and then tough state qualifying meets as their seasons hit the home stretch.
The Spartans host the Oct. 24 state qualifier, but are among four ranked 3A schools– and a late upstart– at a meet where only three teams qualify for the Nov. 2 state meet.

Ya gotta have heart– and guts– to go for the Spike

Women of Troy gut out 3-2 win over City for the Spike trophy

IOWA CITY– West High varsity volleyball coach Kathy Bresnahan can be blunt, doesn’t mince words, and gets right to the heart of it. Tuesday, Oct. 8, during the annual battle with City High for The Spike, she went to the heart of her team and made them take a look inside themselves.

Ruining the Raiders’ night

Clear Creek Amana picks up 48-19 win on the road at Anamosa

ANAMOSA– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers, under first-year coach Matt Hughes, picked up their third win of the 2013 season Friday night against the Anamosa Blue Raiders at Anamosa. The Clippers pounded Anamosa 48-19, improving their record to 3-4 with two regular season games left.

Booted!

West High suffers first 2013 loss, loses the Boot

IOWA CITY– It had to happen sooner or later. However, the West High Trojans probably would’ve preferred to suffer their first loss of the 2013 season after The Battle for the Boot.
The City High Little Hawks stymied and denied the Trojans with a 14-7 win Friday night at City, taking the golden Boot in the process. West captured The Boot last year in a 44-0 shutout at home, ending a City streak. The night started out on a promising note as the sophomores pounded out a 48-20 win.

Defensive

There is a reason that Michigan State is rated one of the best defenses in the country... they are really good!
The Spartans held the Hawkeyes to 23 yards on the ground, 13 first downs and Iowa had the ball for only 22:47 minutes. Also, the Hawks didn’t get a first down until about five minutes left in the first half.
Here we go again.
Last year at this time the Hawks were 4-2, 2-0 in the Big Ten and beat Michigan State, 19-16 in overtime.
This year Iowa is 4-2, 1-1 in the Big Ten and lost to the Spartans, 26-14.

Lady Spartans overwhelm Raiders

SOLON– The Anamosa volleyball team looked like a deer in the headlights.
The Solon Lady Spartans rattled off 10 straight points behind the serving of junior Taylor Nearad and never looked back, sweeping the Anamosa Raiders 3-0 in a conference match-up last Tuesday in Solon.
Nearad was a serving machine for the Lady Spartans, going 24-27 with 10 aces from behind the service line. No other Lady Spartan had more than seven serves.
Solon won 25-6, 25-12 and 25-6, with liberal substitutions throughout the match.

Big score

Spartans roll up 64-3 win over Anamosa Raiders

SOLON– It didn’t take long to see where this game was going.
Solon’s Jordan Wymer took the opening kickoff 97 yards down the Spartan sideline for a touchdown, and it was off to the races.
Moments later, Solon intercepted Anamosa quarterback Austin Seehusen deep in Raider territory. Two passes to Nathan Hawkins later, there was less than a minute elapsed on the clock, and Solon had taken a 14-0 lead over the winless Anamosa Raiders.
The Spartans rumbled to a 64-3 win Friday night, moving their record to 5-1 on the season, and an unblemished 3-0 in conference play.
