WOW! Iowa nips Iowa State, 44-41 in overtime

Hawkeye road wins

I’ve got to admit that I had almost given up when Iowa State scored with 4:36 left in the game and the ‘Clones took a 38-31 lead.
The Hawks had tied it up 31-all when Miguel Recinos kicked a 23-yard field goal, but on its first play after the kickoff, Iowa State completed a wide-open, 74-yard touchdown pass to take the lead.
Thank goodness Akrum Wadley wasn’t giving up.
The 46-yard touchdown pass that retied the game at 38 was one of the best catch-and-runs I have ever seen.
The Hawks had a first and 10 on the ‘Clone 46.

By Jeff Hess

KEOKUK– After last week’s rushing successes by Hunter Kula, it was a forgone conclusion teams would be keying on Solon’s rushing game. However, the Spartans reloaded from their arsenal, and defeated the Keokuk Chiefs, 47-7, Friday, Sept. 8, in Keokuk.

Cross country takes to the woods at Atkins

By Joe Wilkinson
Special to the Economist

ATKINS– To call the Atkins Roundhouse trail ‘tree-lined’ is a severe understatement. Over the last decade, the park has literally had a running trail carved out of its heavily-wooded acres. No manicured golf course or graded trail to traverse. At the Benton Community Invitational cross country meet, even fans stumble through the woods to get to their next vantage point. With stubble, occasional tree roots and a dropoff here and there, it is, truly, a cross country course.

Hawkeyes get it together against Wyoming, 24-3

Hawk Talk

The opening game at Kinnick Stadium is always special.
This is the 36th straight year I’ve gone to Hawkeye home openers, and it all started in 1981.
The only one I missed was the opening game in 2011, when the Hawks hosted Tennessee Tech. That was the game when lighting and thunderstorms delayed the game for over an hour. They had everyone (over 60,000) leave the stadium and when the game started again there were a little over 20,000 that came back.
