Johnson County receives REAP grant for conservation land purchase Malinda Reif Reilly Fen and Prairie located north of Solon

IOWA CITY– Johnson County Conservation (JCC) received a $400,000 Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP) grant to help fund the purchase of a new 100-acre preserve north of Solon, over half of which is native prairie and wetland including a fen.
The site joins JCC’s other conservation wetlands– Ciha Fen, Pechman Delta and Cedar River Crossing– in preserving a variety of once-common wetlands which have disappeared from much of Iowa’s landscape. In addition to providing homes for a variety of native plants and animals, these wetlands help cleanse water, govern its flow, and fight floods.

Solon Centennial Lions Club promotes health literacy

SOLON– November is National Diabetes Month, a time for awareness in our community. The Solon Centennial Lions Club is promoting health literacy through a $400 donation to the Solon Community School District. These funds will be used to purchase books about diabetes for each of the four Solon school libraries. Thousands of children and young adults are diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes every year; learning about diabetes at any age is important for awareness and a possible early diagnosis.

SOLON– A rural Johnson County man and a 9-year-old child were injured after a Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV) rolled over Saturday afternoon, Nov. 7, just south of Solon.

Disagreement on code interpretation goes before council Lindemann didn’t want “rotten potato with new skin”

SOLON– City council members ended up siding with the official they hired to be the expert.
During a Nov. 4 meeting, the Solon’s City Council filled in as a board of appeals to decide a disagreement between the city’s building inspector and the remodeler of a building across from City Hall.
At issue was the building permit for 112 N. Iowa St. and whether code requirements for sprinkler systems and existing second-story openings applied.

Local election turnout tops 86%

Incumbent supervisors maintain seats

IOWA CITY– Most of the people have spoken.
A whopping 86.11 percent of Johnson County’s registered voters cast ballots in the Nov. 3 General Election, according to updated information posted by the Johnson County Auditor’s Office Nov. 5.
A summary of the results reported 84,161 of the county’s 97,739 registered voters took part in the election.
Just over 72 percent of the votes were received as absentee ballots.
The auditor’s office handled 60,897 absentee ballots, while 23,264 people voted on election day, according to unofficial results.

SMS math team pilots versatile classroom of the future

SOLON– In some ways, the Solon Community School District (SCSD) was ahead of the COVID-19 curve.
Solon was already exploring blended learning before the pandemic struck in 2020, Superintendent Davis Eidahl explained at an Oct. 15 school board meeting.
The initiative started two years ago in sixth-12th-grade math departments as part of the SCSD strategic plan goal of having 95 percent of students proficient in reading, writing, math and science, Eidahl explained.

Big Grove Brewery donates to support the work of the Domestic Violence Intervention Program

SOLON– Big Grove Brewery is honored to share that sales of its craft kettle sour beer, Equalitea Party, raised $5,320 in support of the Domestic Violence Intervention Program in 2020.
The beer was brewed twice this year– once in January to honor the Domestic Violence Intervention Program’s 40th anniversary and a second time in the fall, recognizing October’s designation as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Lori Lacina publishes second book

SOLON– Lori Lacina, of Solon, published her second book titled
“Extra Sprinkles- More Reflections From the Heartland.” It is a compilation of stories about life in Iowa and humorous incidents sprinkled with some inspiration for readers.
It is a follow-up of sorts to her first book, which was 366 daily readings, “Mama Said There’d Be Days Like These- Reflections From the Heartland.”

Sustainable Iowa Land Trust receives 40-acre donation from Brian and Sabra Fleck

SOLON– Johnson County farmer Brian Fleck and his spouse Sabra donated 40 acres they call Bee Haven Farm to the Sustainable Iowa Land Trust (SILT), the group announced.
“The Flecks’ generosity has been a true inspiration to everyone at SILT, especially during such a challenging year,” said SILT Executive Director Suzan Erem. Bee Haven Farm is the second farm in Johnson County donated to SILT.

SOLON– He’s back, and he’s on the campaign trail again. Former Gov. Terry Branstad, America’s longest-tenured governor after two separate terms (1983-1999, 2014-2017), and most recently the United States Ambassador to China, is out on the campaign trail stumping for Republican candidates ahead of the Nov. 3 general election.

Kaufmann and Pulkrabek seeking to represent Solon in Iowa Legislature

SOLON The race for Iowa House District 73 is drawing a lot of attention.
Democrat Lonny Pulkrabek challenges incumbent Republican Bobby Kaufmann for a two-year term representing six eastern precincts in Johnson County (including Solon, Lake Macbride and Morse), all of Cedar County and the city of Wilton.
Pulkrabek is the retiring Johnson County Sheriff, having served since defeating Republican Steve Snyder, of rural North Liberty, in 2004. He replaced 30-year sheriff Robert Carpenter. Pulkrabek was unopposed in 2008, 2012 and 2016.

Solon council approves shelter estimate

Stebral to construct restrooms for splash pad

SOLON The City of Solon moved another step closer to building its first water amenity last week.
During an Oct. 21 meeting, city council members approved a $138,957 contract with Stebral Construction of Iowa City to build a shelter and restroom adjacent to a planned splash pad.
Its really been a group effort to get us to this point, noted City Administrator Cami Rasmussen.
Before council members was a resolution approving the price estimate and construction contract prepared by City Attorney Kevin Olson.
