St. Bridget’s Annual Memorial Day Mass Monday, May 28

Poppy Days in Solon, May 19-28

SOLON– Each year, the American Legion Auxiliary distributes poppies to commemorate the sacrifice of our servicemen and women who gave their lives in our country’s wars.
The tradition of the memorial flower honoring the war dead began after WWI when returning soldiers brought memories of the battlefield poppies which were immortalized in Canadian Colonel John McCrae’s poem “In Flander’s Fields” whose opening lines are familiar to millions around the world:
“In Flander’s fields the poppies blow,
Between the crosses row on row...”

IOWA CITY– Young farmers in Johnson County raised their voices loud and clear to the board of supervisors: change or scrap the county’s agricultural exemption policy.
The young guns blazed away during a Thursday, May 10, public hearing on the proposed county comprehensive plan, citing the immense difficulties many budding farmers encounter in trying to purchase 40 acres (the minimum amount of land required to be considered a “farm” in Johnson County).

Solarize Johnson County coming to Solon May 24

Solar panel installation incentive comes to six cities

JOHNSON COUNTY– Local residents have an opportunity to learn more about solar energy and invest in affordable solar through the new Solarize Johnson County program.
The initiative builds on the success of Solarize Cedar Rapids and Linn County, where more than 500 individuals attended free solar education sessions and nearly 100 property owners added solar to their properties in 2017.
Now, Johnson County, Johnson County Public Health, Johnson County Conservation and six municipalities are teaming up with a Wisconsin-based nonprofit organization to launch a similar program.

New Farmers Market opens May 29

SOLON– The Solon Farmers Market will be located in the parking lot of Mushroom Park on Tuesdays, from 3-6 p.m., starting May 29. Other days the market will be open are Sunday, May 27 (Solon firefighters breakfast), and Saturday, June 2 (weekend of Solon garage sales). Early voting for June 5 primary

IOWA CITY– Early voting for the June 5 primary will be available weekdays 7:45 a.m.-5:30 p.m. at the Johnson County Auditor’s Office, located at 913 S. Dubuque St. in Iowa City. The office will be closed Memorial Day, May 28.
Voting will also be available at the auditor’s office the weekend before the election: Saturday, June 2, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, June 3, noon to 5 p.m.
Early voting will also be available at these satellite voting sites:
• Iowa City Public Library, 123 S. Linn St. in Iowa City.
- Friday, June 1, 2:30–6:30 p.m.; and Saturday, June 2, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Johnson County Refuse program

New automated curbside service to begin July 1

SOLON– The City of Solon has officially adopted a new, automated curbside garbage and recycling system proposed by Johnson County Refuse of North Liberty.
Residents will receive two carts, one for recycling and one for garbage, to be used beginning in July. The new carts will eliminate the need for Johnson County Refuse employees to lift bags, limiting workplace injuries for the company.

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on the proposed Comprehensive Plan Thursday, May 10, at 5:30 p.m. The hearing is the latest step in what has been a nearly two-year process in crafting the document; the first of it’s kind for the county.
The Johnson County Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) voted 5-0 on Monday, April 9, to approve a draft of the plan with 24 recommended changes.

Solon man pleads guilty to cyberstalking female teen

DAVENPORT– A Solon man faces up to five years in prison after pleading guilty April 30 to a federal charge of cyberstalking a 16-year-old female.
Daniel Lee Stone, 48, of Solon, appeared before Magistrate Judge Stephen B. Jackson, Jr. in U.S. District Court, in Davenport and entered a guilty plea, according to U.S. Attorney Marc Krickbaum.
In a plea agreement, Stone admitted to texting a minor female over 170 times from on or about Oct. 31, 2016, through Nov. 3, 2016.

NORTH LIBERTY– In the calm morning hours of Sunday, April 29, a sea of over 1,200 people gathered on Landon Road in North Liberty, tightening their shoelaces and warming up in preparation for the journey ahead. The city served as host not only to residents of the Corridor area but also to people from across the U.S. as the RUN CRANDIC half marathon began.
