Help wanted: Workers skilled in industrial arts

State senators Kinney and Mathis talk jobs at North Liberty meeting

NORTH LIBERTY— The overarching theme of the evening was jobs. But a lively discussion among legislators and about a dozen constituents ranged widely, from the role of career preparation in K-12 education, to the need for a public transit system, to the challenges of getting broadband connectivity to rural and smaller communities, and even the potential of industrial hemp as a cash crop for Iowa.

NLFD responds to house fire in Penn Township

NORTH LIBERTY– On the evening of Sunday, Nov. 19 at 6:11 p.m., the North Liberty Fire Department was dispatched to 8 Brickwood Knoll NE for a house fire. North Liberty engine 112 arrived on scene and found an attached garage fully involved with fire extending into the residence. The fire was under control in about an hour and no other structures were involved.  

Free Thanksgiving dinner at South Slope Nov. 23

NORTH LIBERTY– For the sixth year in a row, a free Thanksgiving Dinner will be available to residents of North Liberty, thanks to local community members and several businesses. On Thanksgiving Day from noon until 4 p.m., a full Thanksgiving meal will be available for residents of North Liberty at the South Slope Community Center, in North Liberty.

NORTH LIBERTY— It was an evening of celebration for Keystone Place at Forevergreen. Staff, residents and locals of the retirement community celebrated its first year in North Liberty on Thursday, Nov. 9.

Threats to Liberty High Juvenile in custody

Instagram posts prompted school closure and arrest

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Police Department took a minor into custody Friday, Nov. 17, following a series of threats towards students of Liberty High School.
At about 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, police dispatch received word an anonymous individual made posts that evening threatening to “shoot up” Liberty High School with references to individual students. The comments were made through an anonymous profile, in a group chat, on Instagram, a popular social media application.

Residents vent frustrations and concerns at packed city council meeting

TIFFIN– Springmier Community Library barely managed to house the capacity attendance of the Tiffin City Council meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 7.
The meeting had a lively initiation with a public hearing for the assessment of the Original Town Urbanization Project. Behind the fully occupied rows of seating, additional residents stood in the back of the room, some soured by a recently completed project, others anxious about oncoming construction plans and many eager to voice their concerns.

CCA bids farewell to “Cappy”

School district seeks consistency through branding

OXFORD— Fare thee well, Cappy. And may fair winds and following seas be with ye.
Cappy, the unofficial mascot of the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) high school baseball program has likely sailed his last season with the Clippers. Cappy, a grizzled ship’s Captain, was introduced to CCA in 2013 on a banner attached to the outfield fence, and quickly became something of a controversial figure.

Free Thanksgiving Meal hosted by Our Lord’s Church Thursday, Nov. 23

SOLON– Our Lord’s Church will serve a free Thanksgiving meal Thursday, Nov. 23. All are welcome. Reservations are not required but would be helpful. The meal will be served at noon at the church, located at 131 N. Market St. in Solon. Rides and deliveries are also available. Donate Trees for Xmas walk

SOLON– The Solon Old Gold Diner Site Council and the United Methodist Women and Men will be teaming up for a third annual Christmas Tree Walk Contest from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, at the Solon Methodist Church Family Life Center.
Enter a tree or wreath selecting from the following categories: Originality, Traditional, Theme, Unusual, General.
There are no entry fees and families, businesses and organizations are encouraged to participate in the winter fundraiser, which will direct goodwill donations to community non-profits.

Venture Crew Can Drive Sunday, Nov. 26

SOLON– Are those cans and bottles from Thanksgiving pilling up? Let Solon Venture Crew 52 take care of them. Solon Venture Crew Can Drive is Sunday, Nov. 26, at St. Mary Catholic Church parking lot, from noon to 4 p.m. Venture Crew is a group of young adults, ages 14 to 21, who get together for meetings and go on venture filled trips.

Middle School may soon be open for public use.

SOLON– Within a few months, portions of the former Solon Middle School may be open for public use.
Solon city and school officials have been working behind the scenes to investigate a collaboration which may eventually offer residents something they haven’t had before– a community center.
“The public is extremely eager to take advantage of this opportunity,” said Solon City Council member Lauren Whitehead.
The Solon Community School District (SCSD) has committed to maintaining ownership of the building, and will continue to utilize the oldest portion for administrative offices.

25th annual firefighters dance Nov. 18

SOLON– The Solon firefighters host their 25th annual Firefighters Dance on Saturday, Nov. 18, beginning at 8 p.m. at the Solon American Legion.
This year’s featured band is the “Adam Keith Band” and raffle prizes will be given away throughout the night. The grand prize is an overnight stay at Riverside Hotel and Casino.
All proceeds from this year’s dance go to the Solon Firefighters Association. The association funds allow the department to purchase items not budgeted through taxation and to supplement projects, such as the department’s training facility.
