North Liberty to host One Book, Two Book events

NORTH LIBERTY– The second annual “One Book Two Book– A Celebration of Children’s Literature” festival will be held Jan. 11-13. Presented by the Pearson Foundation, This three-day event will feature book readings, author signings, puppet shows, arts and crafts, costumed characters, young writers’ workshops and more events, held in the cities of Iowa City, Coralville and North Liberty.

‘Black Gowns and Bowties’ benefit at CCA Jan. 26

TIFFIN– On Saturday, Jan. 26, Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) fine arts boosters, F.A.M.E., will sponsor a benefit concert and silent auction event. “Black Gowns and Bowties” will take place in the CCA High School Performing Arts Center. Proceeds will be used to purchase concert attire for the high school band and choir.
The evening will begin at 6 p.m. in the commons area with a silent auction, hors d’oeuvres and piano music by Lynn Conway and friends.

Early voting now available for Feb. 5 Iowa City School District special election

IOWA CITY– Ballots for the Feb. 5 Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) special election are now available for early voting. All voters in the ICCSD will be eligible to vote on the following issue (50 percent required):
“Summary: To adopt the revenue purpose statement to replace the current Revenue Purpose Statements and authorize the expenditure of revenues from the State of Iowa secure an advanced vision for education fund received by the Iowa City Community School District.”

Historic Dillon’s Furrow marked in Solon

SOLON– History was marked in Solon on Sunday, Nov. 25, when a plaque was set next to Highway 1 on Main Street. The marker recognizes a point in time along the line that 173 years ago was known as the new military road from Iowa City to Dubuque.
It was built for $20,000 and, after surveying, was plowed by Lyman Dillon, of Cascade. Dillon, 39 years old and born in Utica, N.Y., was single and the owner of a saw mill.

Free Christmas Meal at Our Lord’s Church

SOLON– Our Lord’s Church will be serving a free Christmas meal Tuesday, Dec. 25. All are welcome. Reservations are not required but would be helpful. The meal will be served at noon at the church, 131 N. Market St., Solon. Rides and deliveries are also available. Swisher man takes special trip with other Eastern Iowa veterans

SWISHER- Joseph “Fred” Novotny, a former petty officer, third class, in the U.S. Navy, served his country in the vast Pacific Ocean theatre during World War II.
He remembered the change he saw in what was previously enemy territory, when the crew of the U.S.S. Arenac, an amphibious attack transport vessel that carried hundreds of troops, landed in the just-surrendered islands of Japan in Sept. 1945.
The occupying U.S. troops were greeted with welcome signs.

Check it out! Lowe's gives Penn library $25K makeover

NORTH LIBERTY– Painters from Lowe’s will deck the library halls over winter break at Penn Elementary as part of a $25,531 grant the school received from Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation.
The project is already underway and scheduled to be completed by February 2013. The makeover includes new moveable shelving, a new circulation desk and other furniture. The Penn Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is supporting the project by contributing $5,000 for new tables and chairs in the library’s classroom area.

ThinkFirst! safety talk aims to reduce devastating injuries

NORTH LIBERTY– It only takes an instant to change a life, possibly forever.
Each year, approximately 600 Iowans are paralyzed from a spinal cord injury and another 5,000 will suffer from a traumatic brain injury (TBI), according to information provided by ThinkFirst Iowa, an injury prevention program based out of the Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines.
