Grass and weeds: How high can you get?

City wants more control over habitual offenders

By Lori Lindner
North Liberty Leader
NORTH LIBERTY–North Liberty City Council members want to keep things equal on both sides of the fence, at least when it comes to mowing.
The council considered proposed changes to the city’s weed and grass heights ordinance at its meeting last Tuesday, Oct. 8, some of which were rejected by council.
The city administration regularly fields complaints about residents who let their grass and weeds go, and city employees were seeking a way to eliminate sending perennial reminders to repeat offenders.

By Lori Lindner
North Liberty Leader
NORTH LIBERTY– Kristine Bauer has gone to the dogs, and she’s loving every minute of it.
Grooming dogs was something that came naturally to the Cedar Rapids resident, who learned the craft from a friend with a grooming salon in Missouri. But when Bauer’s son graduated from high school and went on to Iowa State University to be part of the wrestling program, Bauer said her pet project became opening a new location where she could add doggie daycare and boarding.

State parks are open for business

DES MOINES– Calls are coming in to state park officers faster than they can be answered. Yes, Iowa’s state parks, including those like Honey Creek and Elk Rock that are on federal land, are open.
That’s the message being relayed during the federal government shutdown.
“It can be confusing about what is open and what isn’t, especially for parks on federal reservoirs,” said Jim Lawson, State Parks Bureau supervisor for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. “But Iowa’s state parks are open for business as usual.”
For a listing of state parks, go to www.iowadnr.gov/parks.
