Opportunities to get moving on tap for Tiffin starting this fall

New rec. director lays out plans for the city’s first ever recreational programming

TIFFIN– He had high hopes.
When Frank Haege packed up his family in Minnesota and moved to Solon (where his wife is from and has extended family), it was with the intention of starting a first-ever recreation department for the City of Tiffin. Haege’s first day on the job was Monday, April 13, and shortly after arriving in Tiffin, he said “I am really looking forward to working with all of the existing recreational groups in the area.”
And, he had a simple goal for the residents of Tiffin, “Get people moving.”

New restaurant Table opens in North Liberty

Table is open in North Liberty and features rustic, farmhouse-inspired cuisine, premium cocktails and an all-Iowa beer list.

NORTH LIBERTY– A new restaurant has opened on North Liberty’s west side.
The Table restaurant offers many classics, as well as vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options, while frequently sourcing from local producers. The ownership is made up of seven local entrepreneurs.
Many safety measures were implemented to ensure the safety of guests, staff, and community members, according to a press release.
Table opened July 7 at 575 Cameron Way in North Liberty, the former location of Beerburger, and patrons may visit the website at www.tableiowa.com.

Supervisors return to UDO amendment proposals

Farm Bureau gets three out of seven changes approved

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Board of Supervisors approved three out of seven amendments to the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) Thursday, July 9, during its regular meeting.
The amendments were proposed by the Johnson County Farm Bureau to address concerns of the agricultural community regarding wording and policies the UDO codified in support of the county’s Comprehensive Land Use Plan. The 300-page UDO was approved by the supervisors last December and took effect Jan. 15 after roughly a year-and-a-half of discussion and debate.

Blues and BBQ 2020: A Virtual Summer Festival

NORTH LIBERTY– In April, the planning committee announced a decision to cancel the 2020 in-person edition of North Liberty Blues and BBQ presented by Veridian Credit Union due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
But fans of the festival still have the opportunity to have a taste of Blues and BBQ at home. This year, the 14th annual event is built for the backyard.
Full details were announced late in June, but we wanted to give you a sampling to chew on.

A little longer, but also a little shorter

Celebrating Independence Day in the COVID-19 era in Oxford

OXFORD– The annual Fourth of July Parade was both a little longer, and also a little shorter this year. The parade, held on Saturday, July 4, followed a different route, and also had noticeably fewer entries than in some previous years.
In June, a city council member, and a member of the Oxford First Responders, created the new and longer parade route in the hopes of spreading out the crowds for social distancing; a concern during the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.

CCA and ICCSD respond to Dept. of Ed. guidance for reopening schools

DES MOINES– On Thursday, June 25, the Iowa Department of Education (DoE) released its Reopening Guidance for Schools, a two-page document created in partnership with the Iowa Department of Public Health, and to be used in conjunction with the “Return-to-Learn Support Document.” The document drew swift criticism for its bare bones content focusing on health and safety while discouraging temperature taking, and not recommending the mandatory use of masks or face coverings.

North Liberty Community Pantry’s Annual Turkey Trot goes virtual

NORTH LIBERTY– Each year, hundreds of runners compete in the North Liberty Turkey Trot to raise funds for the North Liberty Community Pantry (NLCP) during the “Thanksgiving In July” celebration. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, these funds are needed now more than ever, but the pantry wants to keep the community safe.
“We did not feel right having 300-plus sweaty runners gather in Centennial Park,” said NLCP Executive Director Kaila Rome. “Organizing such a large event takes many hours of staff and volunteer time. We need all that time to focus on serving our community.”

Keeping the kiddos fed

CCA provides over 53,000 meals during shutdown, and theyre not done yet

TIFFIN When the COVID-19 crisis closed schools, districts across the state scrambled to provide distance learning opportunities and electronic devices to make it possible. They also had to come up with a way to provide a more basic need: the lunches and breakfasts many of their students depended on.
The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District quickly mobilized on both fronts, distributing Chromebook tablets and acquiring and distributing Internet hot spots. The district also formulated a first-of-its-kind (for CCA) plan to keep the meals coming.

A little knowledge can save a life

Diventures in North Liberty urges safety in and around the water this summer

NORTH LIBERTY– As the COVID-19 crisis continues, people are finding fewer than normal recreational opportunities, including taking a dip in a municipal swimming pool. The outdoor pool at the North Liberty Recreation Center is closed for the season while the indoor pool is open for lap swimming by reservation only.

Not as much pomp, fewer parades and little in the way of illuminations

4th of July celebrations look different in the age of COVID and fireworks ordinances

IOWA CITY– John Adams commented on the Fourth of July, “It will be celebrated with pomp and parade, bonfires and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other.”
However, with ongoing concerns over the COVID-19 virus and restrictions on the personal use of fireworks, this year’s celebration of Independence Day may well have far less pomp, fewer parades, socially-distant bonfires, and little in the way of “illuminations.”

Blues and BBQ cooks up a socially distant alternative

By the North Liberty Blues and BBQ Committee

NORTH LIBERTY– It’s been two months since North Liberty Blues and BBQ organizers announced a decision to cancel the 2020 in-person edition of North Liberty Blues and BBQ presented by Veridian Credit Union due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, but fans of the festival can still have a taste of Blues and BBQ at home.
