Supervisors make board and commission appointments, but vacancies remain

IOWA CITY The Johnson County Board of Supervisors made several appointments to county boards and commissions during its regular meeting Thursday, Dec. 10, but open seats still remain for volunteers looking to serve their community.
The Compensation Commission, which prepares a compensation (pay) schedule for elected county officers for the succeeding fiscal year, has three openings, which will be advertised for one month by the county. The supervisors appointed Dave Parsons to a one-year term, which starts on Jan. 1, 2021.

Red Fern Dog Parks grass needs your help

NORTH LIBERTY The good news is dogs, and their humans, love Red Fern Dog Park. Really love it.
The bad news is all the love and heavy use impacted the parks young grass.
Red Fern Dog Park has to close in the spring to help a recent dormant reseeding take root. Meanwhile, the park remains open and memberships wont be required until after the closure. The park is expected close from March 1 to May 31, 2021, depending on weather.

A Silent Night in Oxford

A couple walks along a quiet stretch of Augusta Avenue in Oxford in the early evening of Friday, Dec. 4. A “Light Up Oxford!” event, complete with a visit from Santa Claus, had been scheduled for the evening, but was cancelled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
“With the numbers (of positive cases) spiking we didn’t think we could do it and follow all the rules of social distancing,” event organizer Kimberly Kumpf Carolan said.

Mollie Upton crowned 2021 Iowa Miss United States Agriculture

TIFFIN– A Tiffin native and 2016 Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School graduate is Iowa’s newest agricultural ambassador. Mollie Upton was crowned the 2021 Iowa Miss United States Agriculture the weekend of Nov. 20-21 in Maryville, Mo., and competes for the national title June 18-19, 2021, in Orlando, Fla.
Joining 4-H around the age of 12 fueled Upton’s passion for agriculture, along with taking ag classes and joining Future Farmers of America (FFA) at Williamsburg High School during her time at CCA. CCA did not have an ag program at the time, but does currently.

JoCo supes to appoint candidates to fill board and commission vacancies

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Board of Supervisors expected to fill vacancies on a variety of boards and commissions during the regular meeting on Thursday, Dec. 10. According to Mike Hensch, the office executive director for the supervisors, 12 such organizations had vacancies in need of appointments. Hensch gave the supervisors a briefing during their Thursday, Dec. 3, informal meeting.

Iowa City Schools to stay online only through Dec. 11

State issues district another waiver due to increased COVID-19 rates

IOWA CITY– Students in the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) continue to attend school from the comfort of their homes, and via computer, at least through Friday, Dec. 11. The district moved back to all online learning on Monday, Nov. 16, due to high COVID-19 positivity rates in Johnson County, and initially planned to return to the classrooms on Monday, Nov. 30, after the Thanksgiving break.

North Liberty’s annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner adapts to the pandemic

NORTH LIBERTY– Thanksgiving is a holiday steeped in tradition, but like just about everything you can think of, it too has been altered this year by fears of the COVID-19 virus. Case in point, for nine years people in North Liberty gathered at the South Slope Cooperative Communications facility on North Front Street for a free Thanksgiving dinner.

City of North Liberty appoints Neighborhood Ambassadors

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty welcomed 41 residents to its Neighborhood Ambassador program. They are the first volunteers selected for the new program and are key players in the city’s Great Neighborhoods Initiative.

Indoor pool closed for heater repairs

NORTH LIBERTY– The indoor pool has closed for repairs.
Last week, the heater that usually keeps the indoor pool water heated to a comfortable 84 degrees went down, and the water’s temperature slowly started to drop. While our staff kept the pool open through Wednesday, over the Thanksgiving break, the water temperature hit a chilly 76 degrees and staff has closed the pool.
The aquatics team hopes to have a timeline for repair from its contractors and will provide that to patrons once it’s established.

Liberty High mourns and remembers a young life lost

NORTH LIBERTY– A very dark year got even darker for the Liberty High School community as 17-year-old Liberty High senior Brooke Anne Langland died on Friday, Nov. 13.
She was born on Dec. 17, 2002, to John and Traci Langland. A senior, she had been accepted into the University of Iowa to pursue a career in healthcare, and was planning to try out for the Iowa Dance Team. “Since the age of three, Brooke had lived and breathed dance,” her obituary said. She was a member of Liberty High’s three-time state championship dance team.

CCA school board keeps things the same in annual organizational meeting

OXFORD– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District, the “Home of the Clippers,” will see no changes at the top of the school board after the board of directors’ annual organizational meeting on Thursday, Nov. 19.
Board President Jennifer Mooney retained her post following nomination and without an opposing challenge. Mooney was voted-in unanimously with board member Kathy Swenka absent. Vice-president Matt McAreavy also retained his position after nomination without a challenger, and by unanimous vote of the board.
