Business

J.L. Palmer CPA:

A professional with your security in mind

NORTH LIBERTY– It can happen to anyone– even the experts.
After 20-plus years of experience as a certified professional accountant (CPA), Jennifer L. Palmer wasn’t too shocked when she became a victim of tax return identity theft.
“The bad guys are getting more sophisticated and smarter,” she said. “It’s very lucrative and very organized crime.”
Palmer– who has served the North Liberty community since 1995– said while there’s not much one can do to avoid falling prey to these criminals, there are some precautionary measures to be taken.

Taxes Plus

Excellent service, reasonable price

CORALVILLE— All five enrolled agents on the staff at Taxes Plus have returned for another tax season.
Enrolled agents (EAs) are currently the only tax professionals tested by the IRS before being admitted to practice. They have unlimited rights to represent clients before the IRS, must adhere to a code of ethics and must take continuing professional education.
The newest EA, M. Jon Brown, joined the firm last year and works full-time year-round. He was admitted to practice as an EA in 2015 and has 12 years of tax preparation experience.

The Downtown Dachsund: From beach bucket to boutique

Melissa and Tom Reed follow entreprenurial spirit to Dows Street

ELY– “Why isn’t there a collapsible beach pail?”
Three and a half years ago, Melissa and Tom Reed’s first entrepreneurial project began with that simple question. Upon arriving at Myrtle Beach while on vacation, their son Landon looked around and said, “I want a bucket.” With no buckets to be found at the beach, they had to pack up and go into town to buy one.
When it came time to go home, Landon was very disappointed his new bucket had to be left behind.
“It created so many memories, he wanted to take it with us,” Melissa recalled.

Living the good life at Keystone Place

New senior facility provides quality care and location

NORTH LIBERTY– Sue and Bruce Clark, of Iowa City, were finally able to move into their new home late last month– along with dozens of other area seniors.
“It’s been a long time we’ve been waiting,” said Sue. “We’re proud that we can live here.”

Beer Burger coming soon

Family-friendly restaurant to feature Iowa breweries

NORTH LIBERTY– Though the menu is being kept secret until opening day, future customers can probably venture a good guess as to what will be served at a restaurant called Beer Burger.
“If you think about it, it’s super simple,” said co-owner Bobby Thompson. “Ninety percent of people that walk into a restaurant get a beer and a burger.”

Cider house will rule

Rapid Creek Cidery to showcase craft brews at Wilson’s Orchard

IOWA CITY– You might call him the Johnny Appleseed of Johnson County.
Spend a little time talking apples with Paul Rasch and you easily imagine him sitting down with that iconic apple evangelist of the 19th century, quaffing hard cider and striking up a spirited conversation on the relative merits of heritage fruit trees and the ripening schedules of various cultivars.

Life on the mat

Missouri transplant opens martial arts gym for kids, adults

NORTH LIBERTY– When Ben Brown was a kid, he just wanted to be a ninja. Now, he hopes to help other kids on their way to fulfilling that dream.
And, the grown-ups are invited.
“I hear often that adults would love to train for various reasons, it’s a good workout, it sounds fun, or they just want to defend themselves,” said Brown. “But they just feel weird standing next to a 9-year-old. I get that completely.”

Stop and sell the flowers

North Liberty woman in year one of backyard floral operation

NORTH LIBERTY– A quiet, floral oasis lies undiscovered in the heart of North Liberty but flower enthusiast Jennifer Hobbs hopes to change that.
Disturbed only by the occasional hum of a lawnmower or barking dog, Five Petal Farm is in its first official year selling fresh cut flowers, dried bouquets and more– all grown on less than an acre of urban dirt.
“There’s so much you can do with your yard instead of going out and mowing grass,” said Hobbs, who has very little lawn of her own to cut.

Breathing room

North Liberty Family Health Centre moves, expands

NORTH LIBERTY– Care providers, responsible for making their patients happy and healthy, should be happy and healthy themselves, right?
The staff at North Liberty Family Health Centre (NLFHC) thought so. After 21 years at its location on West Cherry Street, owners of the independent practice decided to move into a space with, literally, a little more legroom.
“We just had staff members sitting on top of one another,” said Dr. Natalie (Tally) Hempy. “We were all getting carpal tunnel. We were always twisting to look at each other and our patients.”
