Business

A season in limbo

Penn Landing Market’s future in question

NORTH LIBERTY– Summer break is in full force in North Liberty. The rec center pool is open for business, and cyclists are eagerly strapping on their helmets for a weekend ride. But the absence of a certain community fixture may leave some locals scratching their heads.

Spiritual successor

Junge Ford North Liberty carries on the legacy of a longtime Oxford business, Carter Ford. Junge Auto Group purchased the reputable dealership from Mary Ann Carter and Carole Hebl, the widow and daughter of former owner Ted Carter.

Yoga for every body

Wellfinity brings yoga and wellness coaching to North Liberty

North Liberty Leader
NORTH LIBERTY– It was a calm and sunny Saturday morning as just over a half-dozen students began their weekend with a yoga session. Counseled by words of mindfulness, the intimate class was led in a series of stretches and poses, de-stressing from the work week over a subtle backdrop of ambient music, tucked away in a dimly lit sanctuary north of Cherry Street.
Wellfinity opened its doors to North Liberty on Feb. 1. A culmination of many years of experience, it focuses primarily on yoga, wellness coaching and an alternative medicine known as reiki.

Keeping his community moving

Former Hawkeye brings lessons from gridiron to chiropractic

NORTH LIBERTY– In 2008, Iowa native Mike Humpal was on his way to a career in the NFL. The student-athlete for the Iowa Hawkeyes had been enlisted to the Pittsburgh Steelers during the sixth round draft that spring. During a preseason game, however, the young linebacker suffered a spinal cord concussion, a neck injury that resulted in being placed on injured reserve for the season.
“In games when you’re tackling guys, running full-speed into 350-pound linemen, that isn’t necessarily the best thing for your neck long-term,” he remarked.

Ability Physical Therapy opens

Meeting the needs of a growing community

Ability Physical Therapy is one of the businesses arriving to accommodate those developing demands.

Hot ‘n’ fresh for 25 years

Pizza Plus celebrates a quarter-century in North Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– Some folks remember January 1993 for the inauguration of our 42nd president, Bill Clinton. Others may recall reeling from a disappointing season for the Iowa Hawkeyes, led by the legendary Coach Hayden Fry. For some 3,000 residents of the humble town of North Liberty, it also marked the opening of what would become one of the city’s most revered businesses.
“I was the first pizzeria,” recalled Cheri Becker, owner of Pizza Plus. The new restaurant, she said, introduced residents to the concept of pizza delivery.

Late Night Cake

North Liberty local bakes her way to success

NORTH LIBERTY– Everyone needs their own method of escape. For Tara McMorris, the creative mind behind North Liberty bakery, The Late Night Cake Company, baking became that escape.
After having her third and youngest child, McMorris suffered from severe post partum depression resulting in an endless strain of insomnia. With a colicky young baby and the inability to sleep, McMorris often found herself awake into the early hours of the morning. What did she fill this time with? Marathons of the TLC hit show, Cake Boss.

Big Picture cultivates creativity

Channeling the inner artist

NORTH LIBERTY– It was 5 p.m. on a chilly Wednesday afternoon, and another class was in session. Peyton Gordon, Grant Nidey and Finn Fountain sat together at a paper-lined table as Becky Popelka led the students on a collage using watercolors, salt and decorated paper.
“This is a mixed media project,” she began, presenting the materials her beloved “kiddos” were about to employ.

A Real Deals Reboot

New owners remodel home décor store

NORTH LIBERTY– Sometimes you have to tear it down to build it back up again.
That was the case for Real Deals on Home Décor, which has spent the better part of January undergoing a major facelift. Located at 225 Beaver Kreek Centre, the business will host a grand re-opening Thursday, Feb. 1 through 3 to honor the occasion.
“We tore everything down,” said Dawn Lenth, who purchased Real Deals with her husband Brian on Dec. 29 last year. “All the walls came down, and we had to go through and do a full inventory and just start packing stuff up so we can start rebuilding.”

Wig and Pen Pizza comes to North Liberty

When tomatoes fly

NORTH LIBERTY– When it comes to the best pizza the Iowa City area has to offer, one brand in particular is a slice above the rest. Wig and Pen Pizza has been a regional staple for many years with its hallmark approach to Italian-inspired cuisine. And now, thanks to a newly opened location, that favorite slice of pizza is just a few blocks away for residents of North Liberty.

Rusciano’s brings authentic, brick oven pizza to town

Located at 710 Pacha Parkway, Suite 5 next to Capanna Coffee, Rusciano’s Authentic Taste of Napoli served its first slice of pizza on Nov. 11.
Its inception was a literal Iowa meets Italy, founded on decades of culinary lineage, explained Co-Owner Carol Gorney.
