7th Annual Brett Smith Memorial 5K Run/ walk, April 18

Proceeds to benefit Solon Firehouse project

“My community is why I will always be a Spartan. Since I was little I always knew there was something special about it, and always knew that’s where I would want to grow up and live out my life. I’m blessed to have the support I do and I love you all for it. Words can’t describe how grateful I am to live in Solon and wouldn’t change it for the world.”– Brett Smith (Facebook entry: Dec. 23, 2011)

Two champs!

First-ever twin titles for Solon

DES MOINES– It was the first time in school history Solon had two state champs in the same year.
It was also the first time Solon had a two-time winner.
Hayden Taylor and Jax Flynn ascended to the top of the podium at the Iowa Individual Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines, capturing titles at 145 and 170 pounds, and propelling Solon’s wrestling team to a fourth place finish in Class 2A.
For Taylor, it was the second consecutive title; Flynn became the seventh state champ in school history.
Both had to overcome big challenges on their way.

Lady Spartans’ Holtkamp and Holubar recognized for season performances

Two Lady Spartans receive postseason recognition

SOLON– Following the Lady Spartans basketball team’s exit from the postseason, with a final season record of 9-13, following a 64-55 loss, at home, against the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes on Saturday, Feb. 15, some tears were shed after the young team showed great improvement in only its second season under Head Coach Jamie Smith.

2020 Top three Dan Gable Mr. and Ms. Wrestlers of the Year announced

Solon’s Hayden Taylor among finalists for Top three Dan Gable Mr. and Ms. Wrestlers of the Year

BOONE– Fareway and BodyArmor present the Dan Gable Mr. and Ms. Wrestlers of the Year Awards, in coordination with IAwrestle and the Iowa High School Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association (IWCOA). Three finalists from each of the three state wrestling classes, regardless of their year in school and weight class, were selected by fan and IWCOA committee votes. In addition, three women finalists were selected for the Ms. Wrestler Award. All winners will be announced at War at West Gym, on March 14, in Cedar Falls.

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!

Firehouse fundraiser keeps chugging along $4,000-8,000 coming in weekly

SOLON– Over 550 people donated to the Solon Firehouse campaign, representing 28 states, 29 counties in Iowa and five countries.
Between cash and commitments, the Solon Firefighter Association raised about $670,000, according to Solon firefighter Greg Morris.
Morris has been working to raise funds for a year and a half, and the donations continue to come in at a rate of between $4,000-8,000 a week.
“That’s nothing to sneeze at,” he noted.
On a single recent day, Morris received contributions from people in Nebraska and Ohio.
“Which makes what we’re doing fun,” he said.

Record calls for 2019

Solon firefighters log busiest year ever

SOLON– “We set a record again this year,” Chief Bob Siddell reported. “Four-hundred-fifty-eight calls. The most we’ve ever done as a fire department.”
Siddell presented the fire department’s 2019 annual report at a joint meeting of the Solon Tri-Township Emergency Response Agency and Solon City Council Jan. 22 in City Hall.
“And you can see the trend from 2014 (346 calls) until now is not going down,” he said. “With Solon growing, with the area outside of the community growing, those numbers I think are going to continue to increase.”

Solon farmer Carmen Black and Rodale scientist Kristine Lang join PFI’s board of directors

Three others re-elected to fill farmer slots

Ames - Solon farmer Carmen Black and Rodale Institute scientist Kristine Lang, of Brandon, are the newest additions to Practical Farmers of Iowa’s board of directors. They were among five individuals elected in January by Practical Farmers members to join or renew their tenure on the 12-person board of directors.
The other three elected are farmers representing different regions of Iowa, including Ann Franzenburg of Van Horne; Wendy Johnson of Charles City; and Gayle Olson of Winfield. The board elections took place during PFI’s 2020 annual conference in Ames.

Vikettes end Lady Spartans season, 64-55

Lady Spartans end season with 9-13 record

SOLON– After a season of ups and downs, the final game of the Lady Spartans’ 9-13 basketball season revealed the maturity and grace of an improving program, up from 3-18 last year, following the 64-55 Class 3A Region 5 quarterfinal defeat at the hands of the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes on Saturday, Feb. 15, at Solon High School.
The Vikettes built a scant five-point lead in the first quarter, the Lady Spartans tenacity coming courtesy of late buckets by sophomores Ava Stebral and MaKinley “Mak” Levin, Vinton Shellsburg 16, Solon 11.

Spartans survive the Creek Boys

Solon tops CCA 62-53

SOLON — Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity boys tangled with their rivals, the Solon Spartans, in a WaMaC East-West contest Friday, Feb.14 at Solon High, and fell 62-53.
While the Creek Boys and Spartans did not exchange valentines on this Valentine’s Day gathering, they did open the game by swapping uncontested baskets for a pair of special seniors. First, CCA’s Aaron Cullen put up a two-point shot followed by Solon’s Andrew Coons. After that, the pleasantries and cordiality went by the wayside as the hardwood battle raged.

On the climb

Registrations increase for 3rd annual Lake MacBride Fat Tire Classic Feb. 15

SOLON– The Lake MacBride Fat Tire Classic was not designed to be like other bicycle races.
Winding in and around Lake Macbride State Park, the course has climbed 2,300 feet of elevation over 20 miles, something designer Nate Kullbom said is “nearly impossible to do in Iowa.”
Kullbom, store manager for Sugar Bottom Bikes in North Liberty, said some riders felt the route was too difficult.
The third annual Lake MacBride Fat Tire Classic on Saturday, Feb. 15, will feature only 1,700 feet of climbing in the 25-mile race, he said.
“That’s still a lot.”

New finance officer settles in

One job leads to another for Roman Meyers

SOLON– There was a silver lining when Roman Meyers missed out on the Solon Parks and Recreation Director job.
Meyers, 27, and his wife Megan had moved to Solon after she accepted a fourth-grade teaching position at Solon Intermediate School, and he was at Solon City Hall to vote in a school board election when he noticed a job posting for the city’s recreation director.
With a degree in kinesiology and a lifelong love of sports, Meyers decided to apply and went through the interview process.
