Linderbaum third in shot put

Team 2nd at Maquoketa Valley and team 4th at Pacha Relays

TIFFIN– The Solon Spartans boys’ track and field team had a busy week on the oval and in the field culminating with Tyler Linderbaum’s third-place showing in the shot put at the Drake Relays.
The week’s competitions started on Monday, April 23, at Maquoketa Valley, where the team captured second place.

Great Drake Relays for girls

Conference, state lie ahead for Lady Spartans

DES MOINES– It’s a time-worn axiom; Time keeps slipping away. Good news, if you are the Solon girls track team, looking for ways to chip away at their times, just ahead of conference, district and the state coed track meets later this month.
With nine events qualifying for the century-plus old Drake Relays, it was hard to pick your favorite. But it was a great way to see how the team stacks up against not only Class 3A competition they’ll see at state but the best across the board, in the one-class Relays. A total attendance of 40,000 was announced.

Solon rebounds to crush Mustangs

11-1 win

SOLON– Against Western Dubuque, the Spartans couldn’t find the back of the net no matter how hard they tried.
Three days later, it was a different story.
Solon’s varsity boys soccer team rebounded from a 2-0 April 24 loss to the Bobcats by pounding Mount Vernon’s Mustangs, 11-1, in a shortened match at home Friday, April 27.

Girls fifth at WaMaC golf meet

DeWITT– The Lady Spartan golfers took fifth place at the WaMaC Conference Divisional meet April 30 in DeWitt.
Anamosa took the divisional title with a cumulative score of 201, while the host Central DeWitt Sabers were a close runner-up with a 203 on their home course at the Springbrook Country Club.
Solon’s girls finished with a 223, ahead of Dyersville Beckman (227) and West Delaware (237), but behind Maquoketa (209) and Western Dubuque (215).

Lady Spartans have two get away

Two road losses moves Solon girls to 3-6 for the season

MOUNT VERNON– The Lady Spartans soccer team suffered a week of setbacks with two road losses on grass fields away from home.
Nike had a marketing campaign bearing the quote, “The road to athletic greatness is not marked by perfection, but the ability to constantly overcome adversity and failure.”
Tuesday, April 24, the Lady Spartans girls’ soccer team boarded the bus and traveled to Epworth challenging the Western Dubuque Bobcats. The Bobcats took an early lead and kept applying the pressure, dealing the Lady Spartans an 8-0 loss.

Solon’s City-wide Garage Sale is set for the first weekend in June: Friday, June 1 and Saturday, June 2. If you don’t have enough for your own sale, you can always donate items to The Friends of the Solon Public Library. The Friends hold their own sale, with proceeds benefiting the library. (Donations of bedding and clothing are discouraged as those items do not sell well.) The Friends will also hold a plant sale on June 1 and 2, so please think of the library when you’re dividing your perennials.

Solon zaps Lightning in double OT

Tucker, Havlicek and Noonan combine for shoot-out win over Liberty High School

SOLON– The Lady Spartans entered Spartan Stadium on Saturday, April 21, still reeling from the Anamosa setback the night before, and nursing some walking wounded, to meet the Liberty Lightning.
It would be a test for the battle-weary Lady Spartans to overcome their new opponent, which they would; after two 40-minute halves of play, two 10-minute overtimes, and five penalty kicks per team, the Solon Lady Spartans captured the win, 3-2.

Girls win Gruber Relays

1-2 finish in long jump, Troyer reaches shot put goal

SOLON– In a cold, wet track season with five cancelled meets early, you want reasonable weather, and a win, for your big home meet. Mission accomplished for Solon’s girls.
With wins in six events and runner-up points in eight more, Solon outdistanced the eight-school field with 164.5 points at the Denny Gruber Relays, April 17. Mount Vernon, with 107.5, was second. Girls sending a crowd to the Drake Relays

SOLON– High School track in Iowa has two season highlights. As with other sports, there is the state championship– May 17-19 this year. But this weekend, the Drake Relays spotlights international, college and high school athletes showing their stuff in a track showcase with a century of tradition.
To qualify for Drake, Iowa high schoolers compete against the entire state, not just their school’s enrollment class, for the limited events offered. Solon descends on Drake’s Blue Oval with five relay teams and four individuals.

Tearful defeat for girls in Anamosa

ANAMOSA– The Lady Spartans came out swinging following the 5-0 loss to Muscatine the day before, but the Raiders stolen it in overtime, 4-3, at the Anamosa High School football field on Friday, April 20.
