Solon Fire Dept.’s new EMS truck has already gotten a workout

SOLON- The Tri-Township (Solon) Fire Department’s fleet expanded recently with the addition of a new medical response truck.
Solon 139, a 2019 Ford F-350 pickup with modular service body, entered service roughly one month ago, and has already gotten a workout as EMS (Emergency Medical Services) runs make up the majority of the calls for service for the 35-member department.
“It’s been nice with the call volume,” Captain Rick Childs said, noting at least 85 percent of the all-volunteer departments calls for service are medical emergencies.

The dragon maker

Author Sarah Prineas drops latest title, “Dragonfell”

SOLON– Sarah Prineas created a world where cities run on magic.
Now she’s made another where dragons hoard teacups.
“Dragonfell,” her 11th book for HarperCollins, was released in hardcover in March.
It takes place in an otherworld, on the cusp of industrial revolution, with less room for magic and dragons.
Rafi Bywater, accused by a factory owner of being “dragon-touched,” is cast out of his village, and begins a journey to discover the truth, befriended along the way by Maud, a wanna-be dragon scientist.

Fledgling debate team looking to grow

SOLON– “We’re the Solon speech and debate program,” Jesse Miller announced.
Miller and teacher/coach LeeAnn Gilroy stood in front of the Solon school board members at a March 11 meeting.
“We used to be the program,” the Solon senior clarified. “It’s grown. I guess you could say it’s doubled over the course of a year.”
The two were there to spotlight the young debate program as part of a regular agenda slot for celebrating achievements.
Miller qualified for the National Speech and Debate Association National Championships each of the last two years.

Senior to senior

Solon Senior Support looks to bridge gap between generations

SOLON– They want to make sure senior citizens have the help they need.
A group of Solon High School (SHS) students and a local pharmacist have joined forces for an ambitious project– the establishment of a non-profit to assist seniors with a variety of tasks from a simple visit to tackling technology issues.
The organization they’re forming, Solon Senior Support, will attempt to match Solon senior citizens with volunteers from the community and the high school.

Big Brothers/Big Sisters Need Volunteers!

SOLON/NORTH LIBERTY– Blasting bottle rockets outside, making ice cream in a bag, and roasting marshmallows over a campfire are just a few of the fun, hands-on activities youths have experienced during the 4-H/Big Brother Big Sisters (BBBS) after-school club at North Central Junior High in North Liberty. After four years of growth and refinement, this youth development program partnership is expanding to Solon Middle School this fall, beginning Thursday, Sept. 27.

Volunteering is a win-win

Solon Senior of the Year: Dave Frisbie

SOLON– Why volunteer?
“I hadn’t thought about it,” said Solon Senior Advocates’ Senior of the Year honoree Dave Frisbie. “I think of all the people who have volunteered before me, and I just do it.”
Having always been service-oriented, his main concern was not whether to volunteer but how and where to do it. He settled on a few key areas in his life: helping maintain trails at Lake Macbride, driving for Table to Table and the Solon Senior Advocates, and doing chores for seniors at no charge.

Solon Firehouse unveiled

Firefighters embark on $4.3 million fundraising campaign

SOLON– They know it’s a big building.
They know it’s a lot of money.
But here’s the analogy Solon firefighters made as they introduced a plan for a new $5 million firehouse.
The current fire station on Iowa Street was built in 1959, explained department member Greg Morris.
“Where we’re sitting right now was built by the firefighters in ‘58 and ’59,” Morris said. “My grandfather’s one of the guys who signed the personal note to guarantee payment. The only actual construction cost for the fire station to this community was from the bond issue in 1990.”
