Bolts claim Titan Trophy with last-second win over rival Little Hawks

IOWA CITY– A game that started out oh-so-wrong ended oh-so-right in nail-biter fashion Friday, Oct. 9, for the Liberty High Lightning as they closed out the regular season with a trip to rival Iowa City-City High for “The Clash of the Titans.”
The Bolts won the contest 28-24 on a quarterback keeper by sophomore Tye Hughes with 5.6 seconds left in the ballgame. The win earned Liberty bragging rights over their rival, and possession for at least one year, of a brand new “Titan Trophy” specially crafted for the two schools.

Creek Girls sweep Vikettes, 3-0

15 kills from Clubb lead CCA to win over Vinton-Shellsburg

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity volleyball team followed a Senior Night sweep of rival Williamsburg with a 3-0 sweep of the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes, at home, on Thursday, Oct. 8.
The Clippers won the first set, 25-15, took the second, 25-14, and held off a late charge by the Vikettes in the third for a 25-20 win and the match.
Junior Calia Clubb led the Creek Girls’ attack with a team-high 15 kills, freshman Kenadi Wood made 23 assists, and senior Emily Sly had the team’s only solo block. Lauren Riggle, a senior, put up a trio of ace serves in the contest as well.

IOWA CITY– Iowa City West High’s “Trojan Early Bird Invitational” is usually held much sooner in the cross country season, but was postponed this year and finally took place closer to the end, on Thursday, Oct. 8, at the Kickers Soccer Club Complex in Iowa City.

Lightning claims title at Prairie Hawks VB invitational

CEDAR RAPIDS– Liberty High School’s varsity volleyball team ran the table with a 5-0 showing Saturday, Oct. 10, in Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Invitational tournament.
The Lightning defeated Johnston 2-0 (21-19, 21-9), Class 2A 14th-ranked West Branch 2-0 (21-11, 21-16) and the host Prairie Hawks 2-0 (21-7, 21-12). The Bolts also knocked off previously unbeaten Wilton, the No. 2 team in Class 2A, 2-1 (21-14, 23-25, 15-4), and Class 4A fifth-ranked Western Dubuque, 2-1 (19-21, 21-13, 15-9).

FAIRFIELD– The Williamsburg Raiders had a good night in the pool Monday, Oct. 5, defeating Fairfield, Keokuk and Oskaloosa, in Fairfield.
The Raiders knocked off Fairfield, 112-46, Keokuk, 119-44, and Oskaloosa, 118-47.

TIFFIN– Although greatly scaled back due to concerns prompted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Homecoming Week was held in the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District. Organizers cancelled the annual parade and traditional dance, opting instead to defer both events until a time when such gatherings are safe to attend.

Volunteers pitch in to clean up Lake Macbride State Park

SOLON– Almost seven weeks after the historic derecho wind storm moved across the state of Iowa, the after-effects are still evident at Lake Macbride State Park despite a Herculean effort by park staff.
“It was bad,” said Park Manager Ron Puettmann. “There’s probably thousands of trees down in the park, most of them in the timbered areas, of course.”
The hardest-hit areas though, were the campgrounds, he said.
“Those are still closed yet until we get the hazard trees taken care of,” he noted.

IOWA CITY– Four candidates are on the ballot for three seats on the Johnson County Board of Supervisors. Democrat incumbents Rod Sullivan, Lisa Green-Douglass, and Royceann Porter are defending their seats while Republican Phil Hemmingway, a former member of the Iowa City Community School District Board of Education, hopes to unseat one of them. Hemmingway lost to Porter in a December 2018 special election to replace the late Kurt Friese, and also ran in the 2018 general election.

NORTH LIBERTY– Louis was very excited. As a 6-month-old standard poodle puppy, he’s naturally a happy and curious creature. On Thursday, Oct. 1, however, he had a whole new world to explore, and but for his human and the local newspaperman, it was all his.
Louis and his doggie mom, Maria Bozaan, were the first to visit the park, which officially but quietly opened at sunrise. Bozaan explained she had been taking Louis to the dog park in Iowa City, but living and working from home in North Liberty, the new Red Fern Dog Park was a long-awaited convenience.

TIFFIN Clear Creek Amanas (CCA) varsity football team celebrated Homecoming 2020 with a commanding 37-7 win over the Oskaloosa (Osky) Indians Friday, Oct. 2.
It was the third consecutive blowout win for the Creek Boys after dismantling Benton Community 49-3 and Newton 41-14, and improved their record to 4-2 heading into the final game of the shortened regular season.

IOWA CITY– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) and Liberty High cross country teams competed in Iowa City High’s Bud Williams Invitational Thursday, Oct. 1, at the Kickers Soccer Park in Iowa City.
Liberty’s varsity boys took the team title with 39 points, topping City High (51) and CCA (95). Liberty’s Caleb Schillinger led the Lightning with his third-place finish in 16:56.40. Teammates Jack Kinzer, Christian Montover and Gavin Keeney were seventh, eighth and 10th, respectively. Brandon Barker led the Clippers with a fifth-place showing in 17:07.20 with fellow Creek Boy Gavin Zillyette ninth.

WASHINGTON The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity volleyball team improved to 15-3 and kept the Washington Demons looking for their first win of the 2020 season with a 3-0 sweep, on the road, Thursday, Oct. 1. The Clippers disposed of the winless Demons, 25-12, 25-14 and 25-14, dropping Washington to 0-13.
Senior Hailey Pollock led the Creek Girls with 16 kills, while junior Calia Clubb put up 10. Senior Grace Bedford made 16 assists. Junior Jaclyn Pitcher was credited with 13.
