2017-18 West Boys Basketball preview

Trojans ready to defend state championship

IOWA CITY– The 2017-18 season for the defending Class 4A state champion Iowa City West High varsity boys basketball team has the potential to open with a milestone for head coach Steve Bergman.
Bergman, in his 28th season with the Trojans, has a 499-143 record coming into the new season. Bergman already has 500 career wins, with a 544-179 record overall, but is on the doorstep of 500 wins at West.

TIFFIN– Brandon Clubb’s first year at the helm of the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys basketball program was rough. Several key student athletes graduated, and he was replacing longtime coach Steve Ottoson. For the superstitious, it was also his 13th year as a coach with a dozen years at North Tama (Traer), where he compiled a 165-137 record. He hit rough seas with the Clippers and a 2-20 record overall, 0-18 WaMaC record and 0-14 WaMaC West Division showing.

TIFFIN– Military obligations led Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) Head Varsity Wrestling Coach Kyle Forness to take a leave of absence this year, leading to the appointment of Jackson Litterer as Interim Head Coach for the 2017-18 season.
The Clippers went 8-12 overall last season with a 3-7 showing in the WaMaC Conference.
District qualifier Andrew Rohret is back in the line-up at 145 pounds as a junior. Senior Tanner Cochran (220 pounds) and sophomore Sam Stevens (106 pounds) round out the returning starters for the Creek Boys.

NORTH LIBERTY– Take a drive down Penn Street and you’ll quickly notice there’s a new hangout in townas. North Liberty introduces Tin Roost to its growing portfolio of restaurants.
The brand new location on Penn Street is visually impressive. Constructed in July, the modern style building features a bold, black and white rooster emblazoning its front, accented with wood paneling and corrugated steel, a fitting motif of Iowa farm culture.

Business Boom celebrates

Open house social offers new congregation for bustling business community

NORTH LIBERTY– Businesspeople, politicians and city employees alike socialized at North Liberty’s inaugural Business Boom on Thursday, Nov. 2. The open-house social, hosted from 5-6:30 p.m. at the South Slope Community Center, provided an opportunity for area businesspeople to meet and greet while celebrating the expansion of North Liberty.
Guests were treated to appetizers, beer and wine provided by Fareway and Big Grove Brewery. Multi-instrumentalist Joe Sorensen, adorned in calavera face paint, lent background music to event as he sang and played acoustic guitar and keyboard.

NL man arrested for sexual assault

Resident faces two charges stemming from vehicular incident

NORTH LIBERTY– A North Liberty man has been charged with sexual abuse after allegedly having intercourse with a woman against her will.
Maialiwa Kabandelwa, 31, was charged for acts stemming from an incident he had with a woman at about 6 p.m. on Nov. 2 at the home of Kabadelwa in the Golfview trailer court.
According to a criminal complaint, the victim intended to drive Kabadelwa to the post office but didn’t understand how to turn on the headlights of his vehicle.

Veterans Day Appreciation Luncheon at the North Liberty library Friday, Nov.10

NORTH LIBERTY– Veterans and guest/family are invited to attend the third Veterans Day Appreciation Luncheon at the North Liberty Community Library. This year the library is offers a lunch and presentation by Gary Boseneiler, Veterans Affairs Director of Johnson County on Friday, Nov. 10, at 11:30 a.m. in the library.

Police break policy (for a cause) in November

NORTH LIBERTY– Starting Nov. 1, North Liberty police officers have a short reprieve from the department’s strict no-beards-in-uniform policy. Participating officers will make donations to the annual Domestic Violence Intervention Program holiday toy drive and the department’s Shop with a Cop program.

The Lohman family proves volunteering can be a family affair. John and Aspen have been volunteering at the North Liberty Community Pantry, along with their two children, Quincy and Lucy, for about three years now. The entire family stocks shelves in the pantry during evenings. “The stocking is simple, but an important function for the pantry,” John said.
The Lohmans saw volunteering as a fun and productive way to spend time together as a family. John and Aspen also think it’s important to demonstrate early to their kids that volunteering is something that everyone should do.

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Police Department, in cooperation with the Johnson County Sheriff and the police departments of the University of Iowa, Coralville and Iowa City, are offering the Citizens Police Academy with the goal of promoting a better relationship between law enforcement and the community it serves through education and hands-on learning. Training includes department tours and ride-alongs, defensive tactics, evidence collection, drug investigation and many other areas of enforcement and operations.

Free Thanksgiving dinner at South Slope Nov. 23

NORTH LIBERTY– For the sixth year in a row, a free Thanksgiving Dinner will be available to residents of North Liberty, thanks to local community members and several businesses. On Thanksgiving Day from noon until 4 p.m., a full Thanksgiving meal will be available for residents of North Liberty at the South Slope Community Center, in North Liberty.

NORTH LIBERTY– For the fifth year, robots, waddling pumpkins, princesses, a dinosaur, a skunk, a gecko, a Little Mermaid and other assorted characters, including crime fighters Batman and “Paw Patrol” K-9 Chase, made the rounds of the StoneBridge Promenade’s merchants in search of Halloween treats.
