Welcome Hoover Trail

Phase 1 & II construction bids received by county conservation board

SOLON– The Hoover Trail is on its way, but how will the City of Solon move bicyclists through town?
Answers will be forthcoming, but a glimpse into the future was offered at a Dec. 20 Solon City Council meeting.
City Engineer Dave Schechinger’s preliminary trail plan addressed how to link the Hoover Trail, the Iowa River Corridor Trail and Sutliff Road with businesses and services in Solon, as well as how the Hoover Trail might exit town to the southeast.

Born to be a firefighter

New NLFD Chief Brian Platz looks to be an agent of change

North Liberty Leader
NORTH LIBERTY– As a young boy growing up in Dyersville, Brian Platz developed an early passion for the fire service. His dad was the chief for 18 years and the younger Platz spent much of his time at the station with him.
“Those were the formative years of my life growing up,” he said. “He eats, sleeps and breathes fire, so I think he instilled the love for the fire service in me. I knew from the very beginning I wanted to be a firefighter, and there’s no other course for me.”

The season of giving

Solon sixth graders collect 459 pounds of food for pantry

SOLON– Solon’s sixth graders are making a difference.
Nate Spengler and Mia Stahle, students in Kearce Lindner’s sixth grade class at Solon Middle School, wanted to create their own foundation (the Solon Spork Foundation) and do some good with it.
“We felt it was the season of giving, and we decided, what can we do to give back?” Spengler said. “We just wanted to do something small for the community.”
The two settled on a fundraiser to benefit the Solon Food Pantry and consulted their teacher.

NLPD makes Christmas brighter

Officers and community band together for annual Shop with a Cop event

CORALVILLE– There was a heavy police presence at the Target Store in the Coral Ridge Mall Tuesday, Dec. 12, however no crime had been committed and no threat mitigated.
Instead peace, goodwill and the spirit of helping thy fellow man reigned as officers and staff of the North Liberty Police Department (NLPD) conducted their third annual Shop with a Cop event.

Solon wrestlers take first at Regina

Solon wrestlers put loss to West Delaware behind them,

SOLON– Solon Head Wrestling Coach Blake Williams didn’t want Thursday’s results to carry over to Saturday.
The Spartan varsity wrestlers were handed a convincing 48-23 loss by West Delaware at home Dec. 14.
“Although it was a disappointing night, the message to the team was learn from it and to put it behind us,” Williams said. “It is a quick turnaround Saturday.”
The team responded with an overwhelming win at the 14-team Regina Invitational Dec. 16.

Optimist 13th annual holiday food basket distribution

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Optimist held their 13th annual kid-friendly holiday food basket distribution at Van Allen Elementary School. The club provided food for when students are out of school for the holiday break, for a total of $3,800 in items such as canned foods, pasta, cereal, bread and fresh fruit. The club served 128 children last year and anticipates an increase this year, with figures to be available at the end of the school week. They were joined by Danielle Weipert, Jill Winders and Kris Hynek of the North Liberty Family Resource Center.

A hobby gone awry

Pyles making the Christmas season bright near Solon

LAKE MACBRIDE– It all started 40 years ago, and has exploded into a light and sound spectacle that just keeps growing and growing at the corner of Hwy. 382 and Newberry Drive west of Solon and near the entrance to Lake Macbride.
“It was when I had my first daughters, and Christmas was Christmas, and I just put up a few strings (of lights), and we’ve been at it ever since,” Dan Pyle said. Pyle and his wife Hope have gone from those first few strands to 142 separate runs of extension cords supplying electricity to at least 30,000 lights.

Seven marathons seven days seven continents

Running across the world, for a cause

North Liberty dentist to run seven marathons in seven days in seven continents for charity

NORTH LIBERTY– Many of us like to devote some time and energy to a charity or cause near to our hearts. Others, well, they go the extra mile.
Deb Carneol D.D.S. of North Liberty Dental is doing just that. In January, she and a group of 15 other participants will take a charter plane across the globe for an epic endeavor known as the 777 World Marathon Challenge. In it, her team will represent a cause of their choice while completing seven marathons in seven continents in just seven days.

Sts. Peter & Paul Nativity scene restored

Mt. Vernon couple refurbish Sts. Peter & Paul holiday display

SOLON– After what many guess is over 100 years of use, it didn’t surprise anyone that the characters in the Sts. Peter and Paul Chapel nativity scene needed repair.
The harder part for Sts. Peter and Paul Historical Foundation president Jean Litts was the project itself and finding the best person for the job.
Or, in this case, the best two people. Bill Faoro and Leona Smith of Mount Vernon were selected by Litts, and the husband and wife duo assessed the project they were being handed.
