Something’s brewing in the Corridor

Kirkwood Community College, NL business capitalize on home brewing popularity

CEDAR RAPIDS– When Kirkwood Program Developer Matt Murphy first started brewing his own beer two years ago, he had a lot of questions.
In search of answers, he turned to YouTube, and found dozens upon dozens of videos produced by a young beer enthusiast who went by the handle, terpsichoreankid.
“He was one of my biggest resources starting out,” Murphy said.
“This one guy” turned out to be someone right in his own backyard; Joe Williams, a home brewing expert and owner of the Marion and North Liberty home brew supply stores, BIY (Brew It Yourself).

SOLON– The search for a new superintendent is underway.
Last week, Solon School Board members met with consultants from Ray and Associates Inc., a recruiting agency specializing in educational leadership searches, to discuss steps for finding a replacement for current Superintendent Sam Miller.
Earlier this month, Miller accepted a position as chief administrator at Area Education Agency 267. His current contract with Solon schools is set to expire June 30.
Miller has served as Solon’s superintendent for five years.

The budget is based on a two percent state aid budget scenario, leading to the proposed tax rate of $13.95 per $1,000 in taxed property value, an increase of 25 cents from Fiscal Year 2015.

A room to grow

NL CoLab offers innovative space for start-ups

NORTH LIBERTY– Google was started in a garage, Facebook in a college dorm room.
In the business world, the term “start-up,” conjures images of small, cramped quarters and slightly uninviting spaces.
But now that image is starting to change.
The North Liberty CoLab, located at 215 Hwy. 965, Ste. 1, is the newest collaboration space in the Iowa City area. It’s a place where start-up businesses and entrepreneurs can come together, network and bounce ideas off one another.

Amazing to others

SCSD Media Specialist Kathy Kaldenberg to retire after 12 years of service

SOLON– “Obvious to you, amazing to others.”
It’s the title of a YouTube video by entrepreneur Derek Sivers that describes how ideas that seem so simple and, well, obvious, to one person could be mind-blowing and awe-inspiring to someone else.
It’s a quote that Solon Community School District (SCSD) Media Specialist Kathy Kaldenberg tries to remember each day. She’s used it on her blog and has posted the video to her Twitter account as a reminder to everyone about what they have to offer the world.

Solon Trustworthy Hardware celebrates 40 years of business

SOLON– Walking into his parents’ hardware store, Tom Trump wasn’t quite prepared for the display of pink step stools, toolboxes and tools that greeted him in the front window. It seemed out of place for a store that sold lawn mower parts, plumbing supplies and other home improvement tools.
Immediately, he knew this was his mother, Carolyn’s, doing.
“What are you going to do with that?” he recalled asking her.

More than just the score

NLYBS partners with Positive Coaching Alliance to remind players, parents, coaches what the game is really about

NORTH LIBERTY– Competition was always a huge part of Scott Rundle’s life.
Like most boys, he participated in sports from a young age, where winning was everything and it didn’t matter what it took to get there.
He remembered one classmate who broke an arm while playing youth football at the age of six. His parents and coach made the decision to tape his arm and put him back in the game, feeling he was too important a player to lose.
“That was part of being tough,” Scott said. “And all the boys recognized how tough he was.”

Natural curiosity

Solon senior Kaitlin Hatcher traveled to New Zealand to participate in a biology study with the University of Iowa

SOLON- John Hatcher remembers buying his daughter, Kaitlin, a go-cart when she was in her early teens.
Like any other kid her age, she and a friend immediately took the new toy out in the back of the family’s property to test it out. After awhile, John began to worry about the girls, who had yet to return from their ride, and went outside to check on them. Seeing no sign of Kaitlin or her friend or the go-cart, he went into the brush to find them.
John what was surprised by what he found.

If a student leaves Solon, can they still open enroll and attend?

Board amends policy to give students who move away automatic approval

SOLON– Can we keep them?
Only if the policy says so.
The Solon Community School District (SCSD) board continued its discussion of open enrollment at a Feb. 9 meeting. This time, the topic turned to what should be the policy for students who move out of the district but wish to continue to attend Solon schools.
According to the Department of Education, the district can give priority to those students as long as it’s included in the Insufficient Classroom Space Policy.
