New finance officer settles in

One job leads to another for Roman Meyers

SOLON– There was a silver lining when Roman Meyers missed out on the Solon Parks and Recreation Director job.
Meyers, 27, and his wife Megan had moved to Solon after she accepted a fourth-grade teaching position at Solon Intermediate School, and he was at Solon City Hall to vote in a school board election when he noticed a job posting for the city’s recreation director.
With a degree in kinesiology and a lifelong love of sports, Meyers decided to apply and went through the interview process.

Solon boys roll past South Tama, 70-36

Spartans add road loss at West Delaware

TAMA– Solon kept South Tama winless.
Solon’s varsity boys notched their fifth basketball win of the season Feb. 4 in Tama, never looking back after an early lead for a 70-36 victory over the Trojans.
The Spartans were without leading scorer David Bluder, who suffered a sprained ankle in a Jan. 31 game against Beckman Catholic.
Stepping up to the plate was the entire team.

Spartans sectional champs

Wrestlers qualify for regional duals, district meet

FAIRFIELD– With six first-place finishes and two runners-up, Solon’s varsity wrestlers ran away with the title at a sectional meet Feb. 8 in Fairfield.
“Once the postseason starts you can throw out the records as everyone starts the day with an equal shot of advancing,” noted Solon Head Coach Blake Williams. “I thought our team did well considering we have been battling some illnesses throughout the week.”

Time to read

SMS 40-book challenge a real page-turner

SOLON– Middle school students are reading more and more.
And it’s making a difference in reaching benchmarks set by the district.
At the heart of it all is Solon Middle School’s 40-Book Challenge, an optional but highly encouraged competition over the course of the school year.
Every student is asked to read 40 novels from a wide variety of genres, and are given dedicated school time to accomplish the task.
“There’s something quite amazing going here,” said Julie Smith, middle school instructional coach.

Wrestlers 4th at WaMaC

Taylor, Gnida take titles, Marty 2nd

MANCHESTER– It was a solid showing.
Solon’s varsity wrestlers came in fourth at the 14-team WaMaC Conference Tournament in Manchester Feb. 1.
Hayden Taylor (145 pounds) and Zeb Gnida (152) brought home first-place finishes, with Gage Marty (195) taking runner-up.

Beckman cruises over Solon

Blazers build big lead in 63-43 win

SOLON– It was a big hole.
When Carson Shive hit two free throws to open the Solon scoring and tie the game against Beckman Catholic Jan. 31 in Solon, it was as close as the Spartans would get the rest of the night.
Shive hit a three-pointer moments later to make the score 6-5 in Beckman’s favor, but from there out, things didn’t bounce Solon’s way.
Turnovers haunted the Spartans early on and the Blazers built a 16-5 first-quarter lead they would not relinquish.
Beckman held the Spartans to 14 points in the first half and held a commanding 26-point lead heading into the third quarter.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial traveling wall coming to Solon?

Council approves $3,000 of $7,000 tab

SOLON– A traveling version of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial may be coming to Solon in August.
Scott Rozinek, a member of the Solon American Legion, approached the Solon City Council for partial funding of the proposal at a Jan. 22 meeting.
Council members agreed to fund a $3,000 down-payment.
The total cost, Rozinek said, would be $6,000, plus lodging for a driver and any other associated local expenses.
Rozinek told city representatives he had previously assisted in the displaying of a Vietnam traveling memorial wall in West Branch.

Golfletics

Austin Kopp returns home to fuse technology and fitness efficiently

CORALVILLE– Golfletics is a perfect place to discover the game of golf.
The new performance center features two cutting-edge public simulator bays where you can play some of the best courses in the world with no weather issues. In the back is a 600 square-foot gym and an additional instruction and club-fitting bay.
“It’s kind of a marriage of all my experience,” explained Solon native and North Liberty resident Austin Kopp.

Spartans edged by Mustangs

Mount Vernon escapes with 70-68 win

SOLON– “They left it all on the floor,” Solon head Coach Matt Lesan said. “Some of those bounces that aren't going our way will start to change.”
Everything was looking good for a Spartan upset of two-loss Mount Vernon Jan. 24 in Solon.
But the Mustangs retook the lead when it mattered, and the 70-68 loss dropped the Solon varsity boys to a third straight loss and a 3-11 record. Mount Vernon improved to 11-2.
The Spartans held a 38-33 advantage at the half in a see-saw battle which featured some hot shooting and some aggressive defense.

One win, one tie

Solon wrestlers down Marion, but end in 36-36 deadlock with Mount Vernon

SOLON– Trailing 36-33 heading into the final match, it was up to Nash Altman at 285 pounds.
And he delivered.
Altman’s 1-0 victory against Mount Vernon’s Keaton Dennis knotted the score 36-36 and helped Solon’s varsity wrestlers avoid a loss to the Mustangs during a double dual meet Jan. 23 in Solon.
The Spartans picked up a comfortable 51-28 win over Marion earlier in the evening.
Solon faced an 18-0 deficit against the Mustangs when Jakobe Lahr put the home team on the scoreboard with a pin of Mount Vernon’s Jacob Coon at 126 pounds (2:21).

Solon Senior Dining celebrates 40 years

Countless volunteers have carried the cause for Old Gold Diner

SOLON– They list off the names.
Rosemary Erenberger, Peg Zaruba, Naomi Steinbrech, Jeanne Erhart, Bev Noska, Irene Steinbrech, Elaine Reynolds, Marie Kroul, Bessie Drahos and Doris Looney, Wayne Croy, Betty Buchmayer, Milt Hunt, Elieen Hageman, Anna McAtee.
It’s not complete by any means– there’s a long list of people who helped keep Solon’s Senior Dining program alive since its creation in 1980.

Getting vets outdoors

Solon-based Iowa Veterans Outdoor Experience growing through giving

SOLON– They’re just taking care of family.
And veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces are the biggest family you’ll ever know, Brad Storck explained.
Storck is a co-founder of Iowa Veterans Outdoor Experience (IVOE), a homegrown non-profit which hosts a group of disabled veterans twice a year for an exclusive hunt on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers ground at Coralville Lake.
The group has been around for seven years, staffed by volunteers from the Solon American Legion and supported with contributions from area businesses and organizations.
