Positive COVID-19 cases reported at Solon Nursing Care Center

No serious symptoms, no hospitalization

SOLON– The 2019 novel coronavirus has made its way into the Solon Nursing Care Center (SNCC).
A resident of the facility tested positive Sunday, July 12, according to Solon Retirement Village Campus Administrator Melissa Reed.
As of Friday, July 17, four staff members and 16 residents had tested positive.
Reed said none presented severe symptoms nor required hospitalization.
“The majority are all asymptomatic,” she reported. “They don’t have a fever, they’re not having chills, they’re not complaining about medical concerns.”

Return to Learn

On-site or virtual semesters offered Online teaching to be outsourced Masks strongly recommended but not mandated

SOLON– Solon Community School District (SCSD) families need to decide.
Will students attend classes in-person or virtually?
The choices were outlined July 16 as Superintendent Davis Eidahl revealed more detail about the district’s Return to Learn plan during a regular meeting of the school board.
The plan was to be unveiled to teachers July 17 and released to school families during a webinar July 22.
A team of 38 district employees developed the plan over the summer based on recommendations from the Iowa Department of Education and Department of Public Health.

Together again

Perfect weather for SHS graduation

SOLON– The weather cooperated, and Solon High School’s (SHS) Class of 2020 had its day in the sun.
The Solon Community School District conducted its formal graduation ceremony Sunday, July 19, at Spartan Stadium.
Inclement weather would have forced the ceremony into the high school’s auditorium, limiting the number of family members and friends able to attend.

Two-game skid to end regular season

Solon falls to Mt. Pleasant, Bettendorf

SOLON– It was a tough way to end the regular season.
Solon’s varsity baseball team played back-to back games, road and home, to conclude the official schedule and came away with losses to Mount Pleasant and Bettendorf.
The Spartans fell to the Panthers 12-9 at Mount Pleasant July 13 and then lost to the Bulldogs 13-4 at home July 14.
Solon’s record dropped to 13-7.
The Spartans had an opportunity for the win against the Panthers, knotting up the game 7-7 in the fifth inning, but Mount Pleasant built some separation with five runs in the sixth.

Short season ends at home

Benton Community edges Solon in regional semifinal, 3-2

SOLON– The Lady Spartans had their chances.
Senior pitcher Kayla West and the Solon defense held Benton Community to three earned runs on seven hits, and the Lady Spartans came up with 15 hits and forced six errors.
But Solon’s varsity softball team couldn’t convert them into runs, and the Lady Spartans bowed out of the 2020 season in a Class 3A regional semifinal July 17 at home, 3-2.
Solon’s runs came in the bottom of the sixth inning with the Bobcats leading 3-0. Sophomore Camryn Keith and junior courtesy runner Payton Haasl crossed home on RBI by senior Jadyn Jeter and West.

Spartans escape Demons in quarterfinal

Solon tops Washington, 6-5

SOLON– The Spartans came up with the runs they needed.
Twice, the Washington (Ia.) Demons took the lead, and twice Solon’s varsity baseball team made its way back.
The Spartans edged the Demons in a Class 3A Substate 5 regional quarterfinal plating the winning run in the bottom of the seventh for a 6-5 victory July 17 in Solon.
The win advanced Solon to a regional semifinal against Clear Creek Amana July 20 in Tiffin.

Lady Spartans pound their way into postseason

Solon sweeps Washington (Ia.) to close out schedule

WASHINGTON– The Lady Spartans made a powerful offensive statement to close out the regular season.
Solon’s varsity softball team pounded 41 hits and scored 34 runs in a doubleheader sweep of the Washington (Ia.) Demons on the road July 13.
The Lady Spartans broke open a one-run game in the opener, scoring 13 runs in the last four innings for a 20-7 victory then roared back from a 7-6 deficit to take a 14-9 win in the nightcap.

Class of 2020 to have its day

July 19 ceremony to be held at Spartan Stadium Inclement weather could curtail attendance

SOLON– Parents, family members and friends will be able to spread out at Spartan Stadium to safely celebrate the graduating Solon High School (SHS) Class of 2020 Sunday, July 19.
But if the weather doesn’t cooperate, things change.
According to SHS Principal Zach Wigle, if the ceremony is forced inside, the district will utilize the high school auditorium, and that will limit the number of guests for each graduate.

Solon takes 3 of 4 on the road

Spartans sweep Raiders, split with Mustangs

SOLON– It was a successful week on the road for the Spartans.
Solon’s varsity baseball team took three out of four away from home, sweeping Williamsburg July 6 and splitting with Mount Vernon July 10.
The Spartans have won eight of their last nine and improved to 13-9 on the season.
Solon pitching held Williamsburg to just six hits in the opener, although the Raiders jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings.

Lady Spartans split with No. 5 Mustangs

West pitches one-hitter in win

MOUNT VERNON– Solon’s varsity softball team halted a five-game skid by splitting with fifth-ranked (Class 3A) Mount Vernon on the road July 8.
The win didn’t stop the Lady Spartans from dropping out of the July 9 softball rankings issued by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. Solon had been ranked 13th.
The Lady Spartans scored freshman Hilary Wilson in the top of the sixth inning to provide a 1-0 win in the nightcap of a doubleheader with the Mustangs.
Senior Kayla West delivered a one-hitter on the mound, striking out one and walking none over seven innings and 22 at-bats.

Show will go on for many 4-H, FFA families

Johnson County Fair prepares for competitions with no crowds

IOWA CITY– For most Johnson County 4-H and FFA (Future Farmers of America) families, there will be a 2020 fair.
When the Johnson County Fair Board announced in mid-May it was canceling 2020 grounds and grandstand entertainment, it also promised to find a way to spotlight the accomplishments of 4-H and FFA members.
That opportunity is coming up July 26 through July 29.

City, school renew community center lease

SOLON– The community center has another six months.
At a June 17 meeting, city council members approved a second six-month lease with the Solon Community School District, extending the operation of the Solon Community Center to the end of 2020.
In December of 2019, the city and school negotiated a new six-month lease for the former middle school at 313 S. Iowa St. in an attempt to control costs.
