Students happy to be in school

Public comments on in-person learning as COVID cases increase

SOLON– Solon High School students want to hang onto school for as long as they can.
A handful spoke to Solon Community School District board members during a Nov. 19 meeting, expressing appreciation for in-person learning and their desire to keep going.
Those sentiments were echoed by an almost equal number of parents present for the session, offset by the concerns of two others.
Speakers for the public comment portion of the agenda spilled into the adjacent room due to social distancing guidelines, with remarks held to a time limit.

Stories of sacrifice

Thank veterans and their families, too 1995 SHS grad featured speaker at Veterans Day program

SOLON Words matter.
Thank you for your service, is a common phrase that we hear as service members, observed United States Air Force Lt. Col. Karri (Hirl) Roman. It may seem simple, but there is so much meaning behind that phrase.
Roman, a 1995 graduate of Solon High School, was the featured speaker at the annual Veterans Day program hosted by the school in its Center For the Arts Wednesday, Nov. 11.
Sacrifices are made by all service members, Roman said, although those sacrifices may look different.

The honorees were recognized Nov. 16 at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines during the associations annual Celebrating Excellence Awards Ceremony.

Spartans fall

Waukon clamps down on Solon offense in 24-8 loss

WAUKON– It’s hard to win a football game without the offense scoring any points.
Despite opportunities, Solon’s varsity football team could only find the end zone once against Waukon, when Gage Marty picked up an Indian fumble and rumbled 25 yards across the goal line.
The Spartans were eliminated from the Class 2A football playoffs after a 24-8 loss to the Indians in Waukon Friday, Nov. 6.

Blended learning

SMS math team pilots versatile classroom of the future

SOLON– In some ways, the Solon Community School District (SCSD) was ahead of the COVID-19 curve.
Solon was already exploring blended learning before the pandemic struck in 2020, Superintendent Davis Eidahl explained at an Oct. 15 school board meeting.
The initiative started two years ago in sixth-12th-grade math departments as part of the SCSD strategic plan goal of having 95 percent of students proficient in reading, writing, math and science, Eidahl explained.
