Clippers make one mans life a little easier

CCA students build a needed wheelchair ramp

TIFFIN Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School students enrolled in the Architectural, Construction, and Engineering of Eastern Iowa (ACE) program with Industrial Tech Teacher Steve Clark constantly seek out real world projects to hone their skills and gain valuable experience. In early October, they had the opportunity to do a good deed while learning their trade.
It was an outstanding experience for our kids, Middle School Principal Brad Fox said. They, in one day, built a wheelchair accessible ramp for a community member.

A split for ICCSD school board

Two incumbents stay with two newcomers

IOWA CITY– Incumbents Paul Roesler and Shawn Eyestone retained seats on the Iowa City Community School District’s school board in the Tuesday, Nov. 5, city and school elections. Four seats were up for seven candidates on the ballot.
Roesler netted 70 percent of the votes, 5,548, while Eyestone garnered 60 percent, 4,762. Newcomer Lisa C. Williams was the big winner with 5,869 votes, or 74 percent. Newcomer Charlie Eastham captured 4,959 votes, or 62 percent, for a seat.

Incumbents survive NL City Council elections

Hoffman, Harrington and Smith retain their seats, Wayson returns

NORTH LIBERTY– Tuesday, Nov. 5, was a good day to be an incumbent on the ballot for North Liberty as all three current council members running survived reelection bids against two challengers for four-year terms. Chris Hoffman, RaQuishia Harrington and Brent Smith fended off Matthew Eckhardt and Michael Nicholls to retain their seats. Harrington and Smith are in first terms with the council, after Harrington won a special election in March to fill the vacancy left by Jim Sayre and Smith was appointed by the council in May to replace Jennifer Goings.

Scarlet Martin sets new record at 2019 State Swimming & Diving Meet

Trojan/Bolts place fourth in the state with two wins each from Martin and Aurora Roghair

MARSHALLTOWN– The Trojan/Bolts of Iowa City West High and Liberty High School took fourth in the 2019 State Swimming and Diving Meet in Marshalltown on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8 and 9.
West Des Moines Dowling Catholic took the team championship with 360 points followed by Ames (328), Ankeny (200) and West High (184.5).

Fay and Hartman named to Valley Division First Team

NORTH LIBERTY– Five Liberty High School varsity volleyball players were named to Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) All-Division teams for their efforts on the courts this season.
Senior transfer from Iowa City West High Rylee Fay and freshman Cassidy Hartmann were named to the Valley Division First Team. Senior LeeAnn Potter was a Second Team pick while Addie Schmierer and Haley Hested were bestowed with Honorable Mention.

Liberty High heads for first state tournament with 3-0 regional final win

NORTH LIBERTY– A 3-2 Class 4A regional semifinal loss to Marion last year left a sour taste in our mouths, said Liberty High volleyball Head Coach Randy Dolson. That bitter taste was replaced by sweet victory, 32 of them in fact, in the regular season and got only sweeter as the Lightning knocked off Muscatine, 3-0, in a Class 5A regional semifinal match and Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) rival Dubuque Hempstead, 3-0, in the regional final to advance to their first state tournament.

Liberty’s Trent, Hajek, Martin and Klein earn recognition

IOWA CITY– The combined team of Iowa City West High and Liberty High swimmers and divers placed 11 members on the 2019 Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) All-Division selections.
West High’s Aurora Roghair was named the Valley Division Swimmer of the Year with West’s Byron Butler named the Division Coach of the Year.

IOWA CITY– A number of items related to agriculture, in general, and animal agriculture, in particular, in the proposed Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) for Johnson County has brought forth a firestorm of criticism from the agricultural community.
During a Sept. 9 public hearing, conducted by the Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z), 20 spoke in objection to parts of Chapter 8 of the document, which has been in development since July 2018 as a follow up to the county’s comprehensive plan.
