Halloween events change in response to COVID-19 concerns

JOHNSON COUNTY– As fears of the COVID-19 virus continue, with mitigation efforts ongoing to minimize the spread, add Halloween events to the ever-growing list of activities impacted.
In North Liberty, the annual Trunk or Treat was cancelled, however the North Liberty Community Library compiled online submissions of costume photos, which will be up on the library’s Facebook page the morning of Friday, Oct. 30. The recreation department’s Haunted Happenings also was shelved this year, but a tradition which started last year will continue.

Supervisors appoint three to Planning & Zoning Commission

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) is back up to full strength with the appointment of three new members to fill vacancies on the five-member commission.
The Board of Supervisors appointed Dan Fuhrmeister (3303 Lynden Heights Rd. NE, Iowa City), Erin Hazen (2181 St. Bridget’s, Solon), and David Roggy (2892 Meadowlark Lane NE, Iowa City) to fill the empty seats during their formal meeting on Thursday, Oct. 15.

CCA’s season ends with 18-14 loss to Marion in football playoffs

TIFFIN– The 2020 varsity football season came to a sad end for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers Friday, Oct. 16, at home in a Class 3A first round playoff game against the Marion Indians.
The Clippers were capsized 18-14 after building a 14-0 lead in the first half, and watching it evaporate in the second.

CEDAR FALLS– Liberty High’s cross country athletes competed in the 2020 Mississippi Valley Conference, Mississippi Division, Cross Country Meet Thursday, Oct. 15, in Cedar Falls.
The varsity Lightning girls were second in team points with 72 behind champion Linn-Mar (42). Ashlyn Keeney was second behind conference champion Micah Poellet from Linn-Mar. Poellet won in 18:19.60 with Keeney crossing the line in 19:04.50. Camille Mac was fourth for the Lightning in 19:23.10.

WILLIAMSBURG– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) cross country athletes competed in the 2020 WaMaC Championship Thursday, Oct. 15, in Williamsburg. WaMaC East rival Solon took the team championship in the varsity boys, edging Marion 57-65. The Clippers were fifth with 124 points, and were led by Gavin Zillyette and Brandon Barker in fourth- and fifth-place, respectively. Zillyette finished in 16:41.90 while Barker crossed the finish line in 16:45.30.

Positive COVID-19 case quarantines varsity team

TIFFIN– Throughout the summer sports season, and into the fall sports, high school athletic teams around the state have had their season ended, or dramatically altered, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Add the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity volleyball team to the list.
In an email to CCA parents, staff, students and community members dated Thursday, Oct. 15, Superintendent Tim Kuehl announced the district had been made aware of a positive COVID-19 case within the varsity program.

New commissioners appointed on Oct. 15, with training to follow

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Planning and Zoning (P&Z) Commission was a topic of discussion during a work session of the County Board of Supervisors Wednesday, Sept. 30. Legislation passed earlier this year required P&Z commissioners and board of adjustment members to live in unincorporated areas created two vacancies on P&Z, which have gone unfilled.
According to Assistant County Attorney Ryan Maas, three or more votes are required to approve applications, and with only three commissioners (out of five seats) left, if one member cannot attend a meeting, then P&Z cannot function.

TIFFIN– In 1985 the Tiffin Fire Department went looking for volunteers for a brand new first responder unit.
Until fairly recently, the term “First Responder” meant “A person trained to provide initial care for patients suffering injury or sudden illness. The typical first responder can assess patients, provide basic life support and render the care that is necessary to prevent medical and injury-related problems from becoming a threat to survival,” according to “First Responder, Third Edition (Update)” by J. David Bergeron, Gloria Bizjak and David M. Wall.

IOWA CITY– A game that started out oh-so-wrong ended oh-so-right in nail-biter fashion Friday, Oct. 9, for the Liberty High Lightning as they closed out the regular season with a trip to rival Iowa City-City High for “The Clash of the Titans.”
The Bolts won the contest 28-24 on a quarterback keeper by sophomore Tye Hughes with 5.6 seconds left in the ballgame. The win earned Liberty bragging rights over their rival, and possession for at least one year, of a brand new “Titan Trophy” specially crafted for the two schools.

Creek Girls sweep Vikettes, 3-0

15 kills from Clubb lead CCA to win over Vinton-Shellsburg

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity volleyball team followed a Senior Night sweep of rival Williamsburg with a 3-0 sweep of the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes, at home, on Thursday, Oct. 8.
The Clippers won the first set, 25-15, took the second, 25-14, and held off a late charge by the Vikettes in the third for a 25-20 win and the match.
Junior Calia Clubb led the Creek Girls’ attack with a team-high 15 kills, freshman Kenadi Wood made 23 assists, and senior Emily Sly had the team’s only solo block. Lauren Riggle, a senior, put up a trio of ace serves in the contest as well.

IOWA CITY– Iowa City West High’s “Trojan Early Bird Invitational” is usually held much sooner in the cross country season, but was postponed this year and finally took place closer to the end, on Thursday, Oct. 8, at the Kickers Soccer Club Complex in Iowa City.
