Dance for a Difference

Liberty High to host fundraiser April 22 supporting pediatric terminal disease patients

NORTH LIBERTY– Students of Liberty High are wasting little time establishing their new school as a vessel of support for local families struggling with pediatric illness.
To finish its first year, the school is preparing for its inaugural Dance for a Difference fundraiser. The event will take place Sunday, April 22, from 12-4 p.m. in the small auxiliary gym at Liberty High School in North Liberty.

Keeping his community moving

Former Hawkeye brings lessons from gridiron to chiropractic

NORTH LIBERTY– In 2008, Iowa native Mike Humpal was on his way to a career in the NFL. The student-athlete for the Iowa Hawkeyes had been enlisted to the Pittsburgh Steelers during the sixth round draft that spring. During a preseason game, however, the young linebacker suffered a spinal cord concussion, a neck injury that resulted in being placed on injured reserve for the season.
“In games when you’re tackling guys, running full-speed into 350-pound linemen, that isn’t necessarily the best thing for your neck long-term,” he remarked.

Coral Ridge Avenue widening

CORALVILLE– North Liberty’s busiest entryway to the south is finally expanding as Highway 965 Phase 4 begins. Spanning from Oakdale Boulevard to Forevergreen Road, the total reconstruction project kicked off Monday, March 12, in Coralville.

Management and costs
“We are the owner, essentially, of the contract,” said Scott Larson, Assistant City Engineer for the City of Coralville. “But we have been working with North Liberty staff throughout on the design elements, and the City of North Liberty is participating with some funding.”

Growing Pains

Community pantry seeks funds to match city expansion

NORTH LIBERTY– With a growing population comes growing demands. And amidst the perpetual expansion of North Liberty, it’s easy to overlook a less fortunate segment of the community that could use a hand.
“We just had a really busy year,” said Executive Director of the North Liberty Community Pantry Kaila Rome. “It was an overall increase in every capacity, and we’re not seeing a sign of that stopping.”

Tiffin FY 2018-2019 budget

TIFFIN– The FY 2018-2019 budget for the City of Tiffin was presented Tuesday, March 6.
The tax levy decreased slightly at $11.80. Tiffin City Adminstrator Doug Boldt pointed out, of the 107 Iowa communities between 1,500 and 4,000 population, Tiffin was ranked as having the 23rd lowest tax levy, with Denver being the lowest at $6.96 and Rockwell City the highest at $23.70.

Students protest lack of gun violence legislation

NORTH LIBERTY– Students of North Liberty community schools have a message for state and federal politicians: We want gun reform.
They share a growing anxiety among students, faculty and parents around the nation who demand tougher action on gun laws. And on the afternoon of Friday, March 2, they made their voices heard.
At 2 p.m. during sixth period, students from North Central Junior High and Liberty High rose from their desks and gathered in front of North Central.

Green the Fleet

County transitions to hybrid and electric vehicles

IOWA CITY– The bluest county in Iowa is going green.
Johnson County is taking strides to form a more eco-friendly fleet of vehicles, an initiative that’s been several years in the making.
“I drove a Prius for about 10 years,” recalled Mike Carberry, Johnson County Supervisor. A longtime environmental advocate, Carberry was convinced to invest in hybrid and electric cars on a county level after his switch to an all-electric Chevrolet Volt.

Hot ‘n’ fresh for 25 years

Pizza Plus celebrates a quarter-century in North Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– Some folks remember January 1993 for the inauguration of our 42nd president, Bill Clinton. Others may recall reeling from a disappointing season for the Iowa Hawkeyes, led by the legendary Coach Hayden Fry. For some 3,000 residents of the humble town of North Liberty, it also marked the opening of what would become one of the city’s most revered businesses.
“I was the first pizzeria,” recalled Cheri Becker, owner of Pizza Plus. The new restaurant, she said, introduced residents to the concept of pizza delivery.

Trying health scare inspires Family & Sport Chiropractic to raise money for Make-A-Wish

NORTH LIBERTY– Standing at over 6 feet tall and weighing 250 pounds, 13-year-old Chandler Johnson, of North Liberty, stood out among his peers.
Johnson, who wears a size 17 shoe, had a history of peculiar motor skills dating back to the age of 3, noted by his various athletics coaches over the years. But it was never diagnosed as anything of serious concern.
“We never missed a doctor’s appointment, never missed a sports physical and nobody suspected there was anything wrong,” said Johnson’s mother Angela Bell. “They just said he was clumsy because he’s at that age and he’s large.”
