NORTH LIBERTY—The North Liberty Police Department (NLPD) is joining two local law enforcement agencies to create a Special Emergency Response Team (SERT). The plan will unite officers from North Liberty, Coralville and Johnson County law enforcement departments to handle emergency situations.
“This is for high-risk operations. It will be a tactical team,” explained North Liberty Police Chief Diane Venenga. “It will be making entries into homes, residents, buildings, schools when needed for hostage situations, barricaded subjects, high-risk entry on search warrants.”

Located at 710 Pacha Parkway, Suite 5 next to Capanna Coffee, Rusciano’s Authentic Taste of Napoli served its first slice of pizza on Nov. 11.

Threats to Liberty High Juvenile in custody

Instagram posts prompted school closure and arrest

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Police Department took a minor into custody Friday, Nov. 17, following a series of threats towards students of Liberty High School.
At about 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, police dispatch received word an anonymous individual made posts that evening threatening to “shoot up” Liberty High School with references to individual students. The comments were made through an anonymous profile, in a group chat, on Instagram, a popular social media application.

TIFFIN– Springmier Community Library barely managed to house the capacity attendance of the Tiffin City Council meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 7.
The meeting had a lively initiation with a public hearing for the assessment of the Original Town Urbanization Project. Behind the fully occupied rows of seating, additional residents stood in the back of the room, some soured by a recently completed project, others anxious about oncoming construction plans and many eager to voice their concerns.

Wanted man arrested for armed robbery

A North Liberty man was arrested for the armed robbery of a neighboring apartment tenant. Already wanted for a previous felony, he now faces several charges.
Accord to police complaints, Beauhanan D. Walker Jr., 33, of Country Living Apartments, at 160 Sugar Creek Ln., knocked on the door of the neighboring apartment around 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 8. When the woman opened her door, Walker aimed a rifle at her head and entered the apartment.

During the Oct. 10 Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) Board of Education meeting, a unique building design was presented for the upcoming elementary school in North Liberty.
“We really wanted to do something different,” said Director of Facilities Duane Van Hemert.

The brand new location on Penn Street is visually impressive. Constructed in July, the modern style building features a bold, black and white rooster emblazoning its front, accented with wood paneling and corrugated steel, a fitting motif of Iowa farm culture.

Business Boom celebrates

Open house social offers new congregation for bustling business community

NORTH LIBERTY– Businesspeople, politicians and city employees alike socialized at North Liberty’s inaugural Business Boom on Thursday, Nov. 2. The open-house social, hosted from 5-6:30 p.m. at the South Slope Community Center, provided an opportunity for area businesspeople to meet and greet while celebrating the expansion of North Liberty.
Guests were treated to appetizers, beer and wine provided by Fareway and Big Grove Brewery. Multi-instrumentalist Joe Sorensen, adorned in calavera face paint, lent background music to event as he sang and played acoustic guitar and keyboard.
