IOWA CITY - When the buzzer sounded for the final time, five points was all that separated the West High Trojans and the visiting Saints from Cedar Rapids Xavier. The Saints took the JV match 61-56 in a game which saw the visitors leading through all four periods.
Xavier led 10-4 with 3:30 left in the first period. Jacob Gylten, Anthony Brown, Charles Rogers, and Austin Swank scored for the Trojans. Swank gave the home team a brief 12-10 lead, but it was erased by a Saints three-pointer and a deuce as the period ended 15-14, Saints.
The Trojans held a 27-25 lead in the second, built by Swank's pair of free-throws backed up with a basket and shots from Brown and Reed Johnson. Xavier went on a rampage in the final three minutes of the period, adding nine points to their tally and taking the half 34-29.
When play resumed, Gylten scored to make it 34-31 and Richard Bryant nailed a three-pointer. The Saints kept hitting their shots, though, building a 42-34 lead. Following a time-out, Swank hit a three-pointer. Swank nailed two more shots and the period ended with the Trojans down by five, 49-44.
Jacob Gylten put the Trojans on the board in the final eight minutes with a three-pointer, making a 51-47 ballgame. Brown, Bryant, and Swank also found the basket, but the Saints held on for the 61-56 final.
