TIFFIN - As the WaMaC conference season winds down, wins become even more important. The Clippers of Clear Creek Amana (CCA) put another mark in the victory column following a 41-28 win over Center Point-Urbana (CPU) at home on Feb. 2.
The Stormin' Pointers opened with a seven-point lead early in the game. Ted Hergert put the Clippers on the scoreboard followed by a Clay Miller basket and three-pointer to tie the game. The Pointers sent Miller to the line with 35.8 seconds remaining. His pair of free-throws ended the first period with CCA up 9-5.
Second period action saw the Pointers edge ahead 10-9 before Kevin Delzell sank a field goal. CPU answered in-kind, prompting a CCA time-out with 4:17 left in the half. The Pointers nailed another bucket when play resumed; however, Delzell and Hunter Stokes dropped in a pair of buckets good for a 15-14 lead. Miller sank another basket, but the Pointers retaliated and the half ended with the Clippers ahead by one point.
The Pointers opened the third period with a basket to take an 18-17 lead. A trio of baskets by Hergert, Stokes, and Nile Eckermann put the men in white back up 23-18. CPU wasn't done yet though, as a basket kept the game close, 23-20 in favor of CCA. Delzell nailed another basket half-way through the period, making it 25-20, CCA. A Stokes basket near the 3:30 mark led to a Pointer time out as CPU's alpha male K.C. Tupa gathered his pack.
Whatever Tupa told his guys, Hergert negated with a prompt basket and a 29-20 lead. Hergert answered a Pointer basket with one more to close the period 31-22.
Clay Miller gave the Clippers a little insulation with a three-point bomb to open the final eight minutes. Nile Eckermann fouled CPU's Nathan Becker with 6:31 remaining. Becker's charity shot didn't sting very much however, as the Clippers stayed ahead 34-23. A technical foul by Stokes sent CPU's Colin Kramer to the line solo for three attempts. Only one made it in. But, the Pointers then sank a field goal for a 34-26 CCA advantage.
CPU's Jared Jirak sent Miller to the line for a pair of free throws, building the Clipper lead back 37-26 with 3:45 left in the game. Miller sank two more free throws about a minute later for a 39-26 lead.
With 1:59 left, Eckermann went to the line for two, and came away with two for a 41-26 lead. Delzell then fouled CPU's lucky number 13: Joey Dighton. Dighton lucked out at the line with a pair of free throws, but the Clippers were still sailing along with a healthy 41-28 lead, which held to the end of the game when the Clippers put the Pointers back into their kennels.
Clay Miller led the Clippers with a team-high 17 points. Hunter Stokes and Ted Hergert chipped in eight points each, while Nile Eckermann and Kevin Delzell rounded out the scorers with four points each.
