Wizards work their hoops magic in the Creek

CCA foundation brings Harlem Wizards back for fundraiser

TIFFIN– Choreographed chaos reigned on the hardwood of the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School Monday, Oct. 7, as the Harlem Wizards professional basketball team played a benefit game against CCA teachers in support of the CCA Foundation.

Legion helps heroes with hunt

SOLON– After Don Erusha’s passing in March, his son Mike asked Solon American Legion Past Commander Jim Leland’s help in finding two disabled veterans interested in an antelope hunt in Wyoming.
Mike Erusha, a resident of Wyoming, is part of the organization “Hunting with Heroes Wyoming” which honors disabled veterans with an all-expense paid, guided antelope hunt out of Casper, Wyo.
“I found two very qualified veterans that fit the bill,” Leland said.

SOLON– When Paul Julius went to his first caucus, he showed up not knowing who Barack Obama was, and ended up in Obama’s camp.
“That was a really proud moment,” he said. “Yes! It started here in Iowa– that kind of got his name out.
“This sort of had the same feeling,” he said of hosting presidential candidate U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D- Hawaii) Oct. 9 in the backyard of his rural Solon home. “I did something I believe in, and even though it was small, it’s what I could do.”

Four candidates for two seats on Solon City Council

SOLON– Eligible voters in the City of Solon will have their choice of council representatives in November.
Four candidates, including one incumbent, are vying for four-year terms on the Solon City Council.
The two Solon City Council seats occupied by Mark Prentice and Shawn Mercer will have their terms come to an end at the end of the year. Mercer is seeking re-election, joined on the Tuesday, Nov. 5, ballot by John D. Farlinger, Daniel P. O'Neil and Kevin Samek.

DUBUQUE– The Liberty High varsity boys golf team ended three rounds of Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) competition in sixth place among the eight-team Valley Division on Monday, Sept. 30, after the second divisional tournament. The tourney was held at the Dubuque Golf and Country Club, and hosted by Dubuque Wahlert.

No. 2 Liberty High sweeps CCA

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High’s varsity volleyball team swept Clear Creek Amana (CCA) 3-0 in a non-conference match up Thursday, Oct. 3, at Liberty High. The Lightning, ranked No. 2 in Class 5A by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union in its Thursday, Oct. 3, rankings, improved to 21-1 while the Clippers, unranked in Class 4A, dipped to 13-8.

Liberty’s Martin wins 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, Trent 2nd in 500 freestyle

CORALVILLE– The combined swimming and diving teams of Liberty High and Iowa City West High knocked off the Cedar Falls Tigers Tuesday, Oct. 1, to remain undefeated through six home meets this season. The Women of Troy and Lightning varsity defeated the Tigers,122-64, with the junior varsity (JV) winning, 113-72.

Keeney wins for Liberty girls, Barker runner-up for CCA boys

IOWA CITY– Liberty High sophomore Ashlyn Keeney blazed her way to another victory Thursday, Oct. 3, at City High’s 2019 Bud Williams Invitational cross country meet at the University of Iowa’s Ashton Course. Keeney won the varsity girls 5k run in 18:06.60, nearly 18 seconds ahead of runner-up Claire Edmondson from Dubuque Senior. Dubuque Senior took the team title with City High the runner-up, while the Lightning were third in team points.
Clear Creek Amana (CCA) freshman Haidyn Barker was ninth in 19:42.19 and led the Clippers to a seventh-place team finish.

Teen motivates Iowa City area climate activists

IOWA CITY– Swedish teen Greta Thunberg urged 3,000 climate advocates in downtown Iowa City to take on the worldwide crisis… before it is too late.
She shared a makeshift stage at Dubuque and Iowa Streets with local students who have been “climate striking” each Friday for months. The 16-year-old has made international headlines over the last couple months, including her solar-powered boat voyage across the Atlantic Ocean to speak at the United Nations climate summit a couple weeks ago.
