Another piece of the GuideLink funding puzzle falls into place

NL City Council approves 28E agreement with Johnson County for the Access Center

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty City Council approved a 28E agreement with Johnson County for funding the GuideLink Center, also known as the Behavioral Health Urgent Care Center (BHUCC), or access center. The council, meeting online due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, voted 5-0 in favor of the agreement, which provides a $500,000 contribution for construction of the facility. Payments by the city will be made at various points throughout the project, which was scheduled to resume construction the week of March 2, with a November completion and December opening anticipated.

Area firefighters raise the doors and light up the trucks as a show of support in the war against COVID-19

OXFORD– “The doors are down, all is quiet, but we still stand ready.”
So said Solon firefighter Greg Morris in a Facebook post announcing a special response for Wednesday, March 25. At 7 p.m., the Solon Tri-Township Fire Department was going to raise the doors of the apparatus bays and turn on the emergency lights on the trucks as a sign of strength and hope for all during the ongoing war against the COVID-19 virus.

Lady Spartans’ JV and varsity soccer rosters delayed due to COVID-19

SOLON– Although the season start is still up in the air due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Lady Spartans’ soccer team is at home on the edge of their seats.
With the delay of the Lady Spartans’ opening game, scheduled for 5:30 p.m., at Spartan Stadium against the Liberty High Ligthning on Friday, March 27, due to Gov. Kim Reynolds’ recommendation, the season holds many questions. Not the least of which is the naming of the varsity and junior varsity (JV) rosters, according to Head Coach Amanda Paulson.

DES MOINES– Drake University postponed the 2020 Drake Relays, presented by Xtream powered by Mediacom, along with related special events and programs due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 111th edition of the event was scheduled for April 22-25 at Drake Stadium.

Solon Legion carry-out fish fry very successful

SOLON– In an attempt to keep some normalcy in this unprecedented time in our nation, the Solon American Legion offered its traditional fish and shrimp dinners on a carryout or delivered basis last Friday night, March 20.

P&Z Commission approves changes requested by Farm Bureau, supervisors to decide on April 9

IOWA CITY– Farmers tend to have a knack for fixing things from fences to tractors, and anything in-between. Johnson County’s farmers have been itching for an opportunity to fix problems they see with the county’s Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), which was passed in December by the board of supervisors and implemented on Jan. 15. The Johnson County Farm Bureau took the first step in making repairs and adjustments to the UDO by submitting an application to amend the UDO’s text, at a cost of $750.

35 COVID-19 cases in Johnson County

State total jumps to 105

JOHNSON COUNTY The number of COVID-19 cases in Iowa is increasing daily.
The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) announced the first three cases in Johnson County Sunday, March 8, while Gov. Kim Reynolds announced a third case of community spread in the state Sunday, March 16, and recommended the state close all schools for a period of four weeks.
On Monday, March 23, Reynolds and the IDPH announced 15 additional positive cases, bringing the states total to 105.

CCA ballers named to All-State basketball teams

DES MOINES– The Iowa Print Sports Writers Association (IPSWA) announced the 2020 girls and boys basketball all-state teams with two Clear Creek Amana (CCA) student athletes recognized.
Senior Karsyn Stratton was named to the Class 4A Girls First Team on Saturday, March 7. Stratton led the Clippers to a program record 19-5 season, its first WaMaC championship, and their first-ever state tournament appearance. She averaged 20.7 points per game with a total of 496 on the season. Stratton topped 1,500 career points earlier in the season.

Libertys Bo Gryp takes third in the 1,600-meter run

CEDAR FALLS The Liberty High boys track and field team competed Tuesday, March 10, in the A.D. Dickinson Relays at the UNI-Dome, in Cedar Falls.
Bo Gryp took third in the 1,600-meter run in 4:32.79, while the 4x400-meter relay team finished seventh in 3:33.82.

Libertys Boldt becomes a Ram

Liberty High’s Alec Boldt signs with Cornell College

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High senior Alec Boldt recently signed a Letter of Intent to play football and baseball for the Cornell College Rams, in Mount Vernon.
Boldt made two solo tackles for the Bolts last season, both quarterback sacks and both for a loss of yards, as part of a 7-3 campaign that ended in the first round of Class 3A postseason play with a 14-7 loss to Solon.
