Solon tests West Delaware

VB team picks up win against CR Jefferson

SOLON– The competition isn’t getting any softer for the Solon varsity volleyball squad.
The Spartans continued to battle ranked opponents last week, but came up winless at home against No. 8 (4A) West Delaware and on the road facing No. 3 (2A) Wilton.
Solon hosted perennial power West Delaware Sept. 15, and while the games were close (25-20, 25-23, 25-20) it still resulted in a 3-0 loss.
The Spartans then went 1-2 at a Clinton tournament Sept. 19, defeating Cedar Rapids Jefferson 2-1 before falling twice to Wilton’s Beavers by a 2-0 score.

42 Stanton and Spartans’ lucky number

Spartans blast Trojans, 42-7

TAMA– The Solon varsity football team moved to 2-2 on the season, 2-0 in Class 2A, District 6 play, following another 42-point evening.
The Spartans blasted the South Tama Trojans, 42-7, on the road on Friday, Sept. 18.
It was the second straight week of 42-point productivity, following the week three rout of Union, 42-0.
Forty-two may just be the Spartans’ and Head Coach Lucas Stanton’s new favorite number.
Stanton, when asked if Friday night’s Homcoming game might be another 42-point affair, refused to forecast.
“Ha, ha! No predictions, but we do like that number!” he responded.

First and second at Spartan Cross Country Invitational

SOLON– Approaching midseason, Solon’s cross country teams are leaning heavily on their depth to finish at– or near– the top of the standings.
That was driven home at Solon’s Sept. 21 home meet, at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area. Varsity boys shook off a one-point bump to second from their last meet to a close first place this week. With three top-10 runners, the Spartans pushed past Bettendorf, and a 52-59 win. In the junior varsity (JV) meet, they were second, 30-39 to Mount Vernon-Lisbon.

Girls win division at Ballard invite

BALLARD– The anticipated cross country showdown, between Class 3A’s No. 1 Ballard Bombers girls and No. 7 Solon’s Lady Spartans was not to be. The Sept. 14 near upset, though, came from Solon’s No. 5 3A boys, who went down to the wire with back-to-back state 1A champions Madrid.

Some SCSD families flee virtual learning after rocky start District preventing spread onsite

SOLON– It’s been a bumpy ride for kindergarten-through-fifth grade families opting for the Solon Community School District’s (SCSD) virtual learning option.
But SCSD Director of Teaching and Learning Josh Lyons reported things improved after lengthy and serious conversations with the third-party provider Edmentum, Inc.
Lyons and Superintendent Davis Eidahl updated Solon school board members on the district’s Return to Learn plan during a Sept. 17 meeting.
Eidahl opened the meeting by noting the district’s success with onsite learning.

According to a release from the sheriff’s office, Makeda Scott and a co-worker spent the afternoon kayaking on Lake Macbride June 7.

Homecoming festivities: No parade, no dance

SOLON– Homecoming will look quite a bit different in 2020.
The traditional Wednesday parade is anticipated to be replaced with a pep rally at Spartan Stadium, capping off with the crowning of the Homecoming King; and the Saturday dance will be converted to an outdoor event at the stadium, according to Solon High School Instructional Coach Amanda Stahle.
The Homecoming Queen will be announced and crowned at halftime of the Friday Sept. 25, varsity football game against the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings.

Council leaves fireworks law as is Split members vote down ban

No support for limiting to July 4

SOLON– Solon residents can continue to shoot private fireworks July 1-4.
City council members took no action to ban the displays during a Sept. 16 meeting.
A motion to prohibit fireworks failed on a 2-3 vote, and a second motion to restrict usage to July 4 died for a lack of a second.
Council members Lynn Morris and Lauren Whitehead voted in support of a ban. Council members Steve Duncan, John Farlinger and Dan O’Neil dissented.
