Spartans survive the Creek Boys

Solon tops CCA 62-53

SOLON — Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity boys tangled with their rivals, the Solon Spartans, in a WaMaC East-West contest Friday, Feb.14 at Solon High, and fell 62-53.
While the Creek Boys and Spartans did not exchange valentines on this Valentine’s Day gathering, they did open the game by swapping uncontested baskets for a pair of special seniors. First, CCA’s Aaron Cullen put up a two-point shot followed by Solon’s Andrew Coons. After that, the pleasantries and cordiality went by the wayside as the hardwood battle raged.

Vikettes end Lady Spartans season, 64-55

Lady Spartans end season with 9-13 record

SOLON– After a season of ups and downs, the final game of the Lady Spartans’ 9-13 basketball season revealed the maturity and grace of an improving program, up from 3-18 last year, following the 64-55 Class 3A Region 5 quarterfinal defeat at the hands of the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes on Saturday, Feb. 15, at Solon High School.
The Vikettes built a scant five-point lead in the first quarter, the Lady Spartans tenacity coming courtesy of late buckets by sophomores Ava Stebral and MaKinley “Mak” Levin, Vinton Shellsburg 16, Solon 11.

Solon advances six wrestlers to state tourney

Solon is sending six wrestlers to the state tournament after a strong showing at the Class 2A District 8 meet Feb. 15 in Washington. Hayden Taylor (145 pounds), Jax Flynn (170), Seamus Poynton (182) and Gage Marty (195) were all district champions. Zeb Gnida (152) and Caleb Ebert (160) each earned second place and a state berth.

The state meet is Feb. 20-22 at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Class 2A opening round is scheduled for this afternoon (Thursday, Feb. 20).

Solon dominated the middle and upper weights, beginning with Taylor at 145 pounds.

7-on-7 football gains in popularity

A new football option for 3rd grade through high school exists in Tiffin

TIFFIN– What is 7-on-7 football you ask? The answer is, the game that has grown for 20 years around the state of Iowa, but has not caught hold until now.
“There have been pockets of groups that play 7v7 or, High Schools that will get groups together to practice the passing game against each other, but that is really it. There is not a lot of competitive or youth 7v7 football being played,” said Trevor Bollers Director of Iowa 7v7 football, a non-profit organization he created along with his wife Jennifer.

Legislators look to protect renters, and rein in County Supervisors

DES MOINES — Johnson County’s legislative delegation has introduced bills this session addressing local concerns related to tenants in manufactured housing communities/mobile home parks, and the actions of the Board of Supervisors relating to animal agriculture.
Senators Kevin Kinney (D-39), Zach Wahls (D-37) and Joe Bolkcom (D-43), joined 27 other senators in sponsoring Senate File (SF) 2238, “An act relating to property law by modifying provisions relating to rental properties, manufactured home communities, mobile home parks, and manufactured mobile home communities.”

NORTH LIBERTY– A 30-unit housing development being built in North Liberty isn’t typically unusual or out of the ordinary. However, A 30-unit development slated for construction this year is unusual in it will be a housing cooperative.
Vintage Estates of North Liberty, a Cooperative Community, will build the 30 single-family homes, and a community center, on a parcel of land along S. Jones Blvd.

Three others re-elected to fill farmer slots

Ames - Solon farmer Carmen Black and Rodale Institute scientist Kristine Lang, of Brandon, are the newest additions to Practical Farmers of Iowa’s board of directors. They were among five individuals elected in January by Practical Farmers members to join or renew their tenure on the 12-person board of directors.
The other three elected are farmers representing different regions of Iowa, including Ann Franzenburg of Van Horne; Wendy Johnson of Charles City; and Gayle Olson of Winfield. The board elections took place during PFI’s 2020 annual conference in Ames.

Solon firefighters log busiest year ever

SOLON– “We set a record again this year,” Chief Bob Siddell reported. “Four-hundred-fifty-eight calls. The most we’ve ever done as a fire department.”
Siddell presented the fire department’s 2019 annual report at a joint meeting of the Solon Tri-Township Emergency Response Agency and Solon City Council Jan. 22 in City Hall.
“And you can see the trend from 2014 (346 calls) until now is not going down,” he said. “With Solon growing, with the area outside of the community growing, those numbers I think are going to continue to increase.”

Firehouse fundraiser keeps chugging along $4,000-8,000 coming in weekly

SOLON– Over 550 people donated to the Solon Firehouse campaign, representing 28 states, 29 counties in Iowa and five countries.
Between cash and commitments, the Solon Firefighter Association raised about $670,000, according to Solon firefighter Greg Morris.
Morris has been working to raise funds for a year and a half, and the donations continue to come in at a rate of between $4,000-8,000 a week.
“That’s nothing to sneeze at,” he noted.
On a single recent day, Morris received contributions from people in Nebraska and Ohio.
“Which makes what we’re doing fun,” he said.

Warriors and Rams give Creek Boys a tough night

Scranton wins twice for CCA in double dual

CEDAR RAPIDS– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) wrestlers competed in their final dual meets of the regular season Thursday, Feb. 6, at Cedar Rapids Washington High School, against the host Warriors and Dubuque Senior Rams.
The Clippers fell, 51-14, to Dubuque Senior and, 57-21, to Washington.
Kael Scranton was a double winner for the Creek Boys, taking a 138-pound match against Senior’s Carter Elliot with a 12-3 major decision and winning a 132-pound match against Wash’s Joe Foreman with a pin in 1:57.
