NORTH LIBERTY– The leading scorer for the Liberty High Lightning has set her future in motion. Senior Sam McPherson, leading the Bolts with 217 points ahead of the postseason, recently signed a Letter of Intent to play basketball for Mount Mercy University, in Cedar Rapids.

CCA’s Stirlen Roberson finishes sixth in 3A district tourney

CEDAR RAPIDS– Iowa City West High’s bowling teams, comprised of student athletes from West, Liberty High and Clear Creek Amana (CCA) competed in a joint Class 3A state qualifying (district) meet on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at Lancer Lanes, in Cedar Rapids.
The Trojans, Bolts and Boats came up short in sending anybody to the state meet, set for Wednesday, Feb. 26, at Cadillac Lanes, in Waterloo, as both the Trojans and Women of Troy finished sixth in their six-team fields.

TIFFIN– Karsyn Stratton got the ball from Calia Clubb in the opening tip-off, and seconds later gave Clear Creek Amana (CCA) a 2-0 lead Saturday, Feb. 22, in a Class 4A regional semifinal at home against the Pella Dutch. The Creek Girls, driven by a desire to continue their season, and fueled by a fired-up student section, rolled past the Dutch 75-59 to advance to the regional final, scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 25, (after this edition’s deadline) at Marion High School against the second-ranked Marion Indians.

Creek Boys end regular season as WaMaC West Co-Champs

Schrepfer, Potter and Withrow power CCA to 74-58 win over Benton Community

VAN HORNE– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) boys’ basketball history was made on the road Tuesday, Feb. 18, as the Creek Boys defeated Benton Community, 74-58, and claimed a share of the WaMaC West Championship.
The Clippers finished the regular season with a historic12-2 record in the West Division (14-5 in the conference, 16-5 overall) and tied with rival Williamsburg for the first WaMaC Divisional Championship in school history. It is also the first conference basketball championship for the Clippers since 2000-2001.

15th Annual Purple Martin Workshop/Seminar to be held next month in Kalona

KALONA– A workshop/seminar on attracting purple martins will be held Saturday, March 21, beginning at 9 a.m., at the CAM Iowa Clothing Center, located at 1005 Nutmeg Ave., 1.8 miles north of Kalona, and one mile east off Highway 1.
Presenters include:
• Carolyn Murphy, from Iowa City, will talk on "Monarchs and More"- Murphy is an Iowa Master Gardener and longtime monarch butterfly enthusiast. She has visited the wintering grounds of monarchs in Mexico and been involved in their conservation for many years.

North Liberty author Steve C. Sherman releases his sixth novel

NORTH LIBERTY– In the early 1880s, a trio of brewers in the Northside neighborhood of Iowa City had become wealthy and powerful, and Public Enemy No.1 in the eyes of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). The clash between the WCTU and the brewers: Conrad Graf, J.J. Englert and John Dostal is the focal point for North Liberty author Steve C. Sherman’s latest book, “Beer Money,” a work of historical fiction set for release on Tuesday, March 10.

Pantry “Rolls Into Spring” with 2nd annual toilet paper drive

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Pantry (NLCP) hosts its second annual Roll Into Spring toilet paper drive throughout the month of March. The pantry is seeking donations of toilet paper, a product that is harder to come by than one may think.
“Last year we distributed over 10,000 rolls of toilet paper.” said pantry staff member Jake Putnam. “It’s one of the few items we have to limit, at one roll per family per week. If there are a lot of people in that family, that roll goes quickly.”

Liberty High’s show choirs put on an afternoon extravaganza

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High School’s show and jazz choirs brought down the curtain on a successful 2019-2020 season with a Spring Showcase concert featuring vocal groups Spark, Amplify, Voltage, Impact and Storm Saturday, Feb. 22, at Liberty High. Interspersed among the groups were three teasers for the upcoming spring musical “Shrek” as Agustin Colon-Sanchez (Donkey), Posey Stoeffler (Fiona) and Scott Dill (Shrek) performed solos from the show. North Central Junior High’s New Connections show choir also performed a set.

2020 Top three Dan Gable Mr. and Ms. Wrestlers of the Year announced

Solon’s Hayden Taylor among finalists for Top three Dan Gable Mr. and Ms. Wrestlers of the Year

BOONE– Fareway and BodyArmor present the Dan Gable Mr. and Ms. Wrestlers of the Year Awards, in coordination with IAwrestle and the Iowa High School Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association (IWCOA). Three finalists from each of the three state wrestling classes, regardless of their year in school and weight class, were selected by fan and IWCOA committee votes. In addition, three women finalists were selected for the Ms. Wrestler Award. All winners will be announced at War at West Gym, on March 14, in Cedar Falls.
