Newcomers to give the Creek Girls a boost

2019 Clear Creek Amana girls cross country preview

TIFFIN– It’s a mix of seasoned veterans and energetic rookies for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity girls cross country team this season.
The squad placed 10th out of 11 teams in a Class 3A district (state qualifying) meet last October in Fairfield, led by senior Kaylie Barker’s 22nd-place finish.
This year, Coach Jane Astor returns seven letter winners: senior Olivia Smyka, juniors Alexis Ponce, Kayla Jiras, Madeline Fox and Lauren Lasswell, and sophomores Allie Kounkel and Emily Coleman.

New season, same goals

22 returning seniors and a lot of promise

SOLON– The 2019-20 varsity football season holds some heavy promise preseason.
Solon Head Coach Kevin Miller speaks of consistent expectations albeit tempered with a bit of melancholy as his son, quarterback Cam Miller, competes in his senior season.
The Spartans completed the 2018-19 season with a 9-1 record. They completed a perfect regular season, outscoring regular season opponents 369-99. Their only loss came at the hands of Western Dubuque, 48-13, at Spartan Stadium in the opening round of the playoffs.

NORTH LIBERTY– A dog park for North Liberty took a Labrador’s leap closer to reality as the city council passed two resolutions related to the park Tuesday, Aug. 13, during its regular meeting.

Bumsted is Solon’s Iowan of the Day

State fair accolade for avid volunteer

SOLON– Kelsey Bumsted was humbled someone thought to nominate her as Iowan of the Day at the Iowa State Fair.
If nothing else, she hopes it highlights some of the volunteer opportunities that are available in Solon.
“We are really lucky to have a lot of thriving organizations in this town,” Bumsted added. “Whatever gift that you might have, whether it’s writing calligraphy or being good at Excel spreadsheets or chalkboard drawing, whatever your gift is, odds are you can share it somewhere in our community.”

A taste of success builds an appetite for 2019 greatness

CCA varsity football preview

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity football team had a historic 2018 gridiron campaign, and that taste of success has them hungry for an even better 2019 outing.
The Clippers posted their first 7-0 record in school history and made their first Class 3A playoff appearance since 2014. Sixteen teams made it into the playoffs under the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s (IHSAA) Ratings Percentage Index (RPI), which looks at the team’s record, the team’s opponents’ records, and team’s opponents’ opponents’ records to develop a ranking.

Creek Fest puts the “Fun” in Tiffin

Something for everybody at Tiffun Creek Fest

TIFFIN– This year’s Tiffun Creek Fest offered an afternoon and evening of fun for all ages. The Saturday, Aug. 10, event kicked off with a Kid’s Fishing Derby and featured Tiffin City Council member Jim Bartels as the Grand Marshal for the afternoon parade.
