NORTH LIBERTY– From modest, rural Johnson County beginnings to forging a reputation in Iowa City, A2Z Heating and Plumbing, Inc. now begins an exciting chapter with its new home in the heart of North Liberty.
A2Z’s service radius spans from Cedar Rapids to Washington, and according to Owner Darline Horton, the company name isn’t just flair.
“There’s literally almost something under every letter of the alphabet that we do,” she remarked. “Heating, air conditioning, plumbing is the day-to-day, most of the calls that we get. But we also do a lot of the commercial refrigeration work.”

CCA All Stars play Harlem Wizards in support of school district

TIFFIN– Screams, laughter and jubilation filled the air in Tiffin Thursday night– standard fare when the Harlem Wizards come to town.
The nationally touring comedy basketball team performed at Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School on the evening of Oct. 11, facing off against a crew of faculty collectively known as the CCA All Stars. The event was hosted by the CCA Community Schools Foundation, which is taking new initiative to support the school district and its programming.

Swisher's 6 p.m. siren falls silent

SWISHER– Small towns have a reputation as being quiet, and the little community of Swisher, in the northwest corner of Johnson County, is no exception. However, after recent actions by the city council, it’s gotten even quieter.
The council voted unanimously on Sept. 10 to discontinue sounding the town’s outdoor warning siren daily at 6 p.m., a tradition dating back to the 1970s.

First United Methodist Church facility completes expansion

NORTH LIBERTY– One of North Liberty’s most prominent churches has undergone an ambitious expansion to meet the needs of its growing congregation.
First United Methodist Church, located at 85 N. Jones Blvd., plans to celebrate the milestone with a dedication ceremony and grand opening this weekend.

N. Scott lances CCA, 45-7, ending historic winning streak for the Clippers

TIFFIN– Senior Night at Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School was spoiled Friday, Oct. 12, as the Clippers’ historic gridiron winning streak ended at the hands of the visiting North Scott Lancers.
The Lancers pounded the Creek Boys, 45-7, and dipped CCA to 7-1 after the first-ever 7-0 record in school history. North Scott also clinched the Class 3A District 5 championship (and secured a spot in the playoffs) as well.

TIFFIN– The players, coaches and fans of Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity football surely won’t forget Friday, Oct. 5, anytime soon. The date is now etched into the program’s history with the first-ever 7-0 record, and likely etched into many minds from three lightning delays.

An option for special needs kids to be kids

Adaptive sports program debuts in Tiffin

TIFFIN– Kids just want to play. Sometimes though, challenges get in the way of having fun. An innovative new program in Tiffin is working to overcome those challenges under the motto “EveryBODY Deserves to Play.”
Courage League Sports is a provider of recreation and sports for kids with disabilities including cognitive, physical, emotional or any combination thereof.
“This gives them a place to play, move their bodies, to be social, interact, and have fun,” said Jenny Rempt, owner of the new Iowa City-area venture.

Cab service in the works for North Liberty

Transit Committee hoping for wheels on the ground by November

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty is working quickly towards green-lighting a new demand-response cab service for the less mobile population.
“The voters of North Liberty have demanded that we do something about transit,” said Gerry Kuhl, former acting Mayor of North Liberty, 10-year member of the city council and current member of the Transit Committee. Kuhl is eager to get wheels turning on the project, first introducing an RFP (request for proposal) in September.
