“Those were the formative years of my life growing up,” he said. “He eats, sleeps and breathes fire, so I think he instilled the love for the fire service in me. I knew from the very beginning I wanted to be a firefighter, and there’s no other course for me.”

SOLON– Solon’s sixth graders are making a difference.
Nate Spengler and Mia Stahle, students in Kearce Lindner’s sixth grade class at Solon Middle School, wanted to create their own foundation (the Solon Spork Foundation) and do some good with it.
“We felt it was the season of giving, and we decided, what can we do to give back?” Spengler said. “We just wanted to do something small for the community.”
The two settled on a fundraiser to benefit the Solon Food Pantry and consulted their teacher.

The working wife

Food For Thought

It has not been too many years since the “lady of the house” spent her mornings shopping for the day’s groceries. She would visit the butcher shop and the fishmonger to buy the meats for the day’s meals (often dinner, served in the early evening hours), and perhaps sausages, bacon, or a soup bone which might end up as an element in breakfast, lunch, or one of the dinner courses. Her rounds would probably include a visit to the greengrocer where she picked out the day’s fruits and vegetables, fresh, dried, or otherwise preserved depending on the time of year and their availability.
