NL Community Pantry seeking volunteers

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty Community Pantry (NLCP) will host new volunteer orientation on Monday, Jan. 29, 2018, from 6 to 8 p.m. at North Liberty Community Pantry, located at 89 N. Jones Blvd.

Curbside tree collection

Johnson County Refuse will collect discarded Christmas trees on Jan. 3, Jan. 10 and Jan. 17, 2018.
Trees should be placed at the curb by 7 a.m. with all decorations removed. Please remove the tree from any bag or container. This service is free of charge.

NL holiday hours

NORTH LIBERTY– Christmas and New Year’s will affect North Liberty city hours and services.
Trash and Recycling: collected Thursdays, Dec. 28 and Jan. 4.
City Hall: closed Dec. 25, 26 and Jan. 1 and 2.
Library: closed Dec. 24, 25 and 31, and Jan. 1; on Dec. 26 and Jan. 2 closing at 6 p.m.
Recreation: closed Dec. 24 and 25, and Jan. 1; open limited hours on Dec. 26 and Jan. 2. from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

NLPD makes Christmas brighter

Officers and community band together for annual Shop with a Cop event

CORALVILLE– There was a heavy police presence at the Target Store in the Coral Ridge Mall Tuesday, Dec. 12, however no crime had been committed and no threat mitigated.
Instead peace, goodwill and the spirit of helping thy fellow man reigned as officers and staff of the North Liberty Police Department (NLPD) conducted their third annual Shop with a Cop event.

NORTH LIBERTY– There was no shortage of visitors on the evening of Wednesday, Dec. 20, despite 30-degree temperatures and harsh winds. A steady stream of vehicles swooped in with families eager to catch a glimpse of the Christmas spectacle at 1655 Red Barn Dr.
The controversy surrounding the display probably didn’t hurt.

Middle school wrestling finishes strong

SOLON– The Solon Middle School wrestling team finished up a strong season on Friday, Dec. 8, with a meet in Williamsburg. This year’s team bolstered an impressive number of 32 athletes from seventh and eighth grade and was composed of wrestlers with varying levels of experience including 15 newcomers to the sport. Despite their inexperience, the Spartans wrestled tough from the start of the season to the finish and compiled a season record of 259-227 over their nine competitions.

Spartans close out 2017 with wins over West Delaware, Keokuk

SOLON– Trailing by four points heading into the fourth quarter, the Spartans needed some defensive stops and they got them.
Solon’s varsity boys seized control in the final minutes of the basketball game to defeat West Delaware, 65-58, at home Dec. 19.
The Spartans held the Hawks to just seven points in the final eight minutes after being down 51-47 at the end of the third.

SOLON– Despite defeating Keokuk and Vinton-Shellsburg in the opening rounds of the Solon Duals Dec. 21, Solon Head Wrestling Coach Blake Williams was not satisfied.
“The first two duals we were not wrestling to our potential and were getting out-fought in some situations,” Williams said. “Our challenge to the team was to go out and wrestle six minutes as hard as they could.”
In the way was Prairie City-Monroe (PCM), No. 6 in the dual rankings (Solon is ranked No. 13).

Solon girls hold off West Delaware 49-40

MANCHESTER– Juniors Erin Kerkhoff, Gabby Marty, Taylor Ryan and Abby Smith, along with senior Brianna Smith started, in Manchester, as the Lady Spartans took the court, clad in their charcoal colored travel uniforms, against West Delaware. The Lady Spartans made Christmas special this year, snatching a win from the West Delaware Hawks, 49-40, before the Christmas break on Tuesday, Dec. 19.
