Antique Roadshowing, Aug. 23

SOLON– The Solon Public Library is hosting the first Antique Roadshowing Wednesday, Aug. 23, from 9 a.m. until noon for the August Senior Conversations. Dick Taber and Michelle Juehring, expert antique presenters who spoke at the June conversations’ event on various ways to pass on family valuables, will return to perform appraisals for a modest charge.
So much interest in the June event prompted this exciting follow-up. Fifteen-to 20-minute appointments may be made for either antique items or jewelry pieces by calling 624-2710.

Learning experience ahead for Clippers VB

TIFFIN– School doesn’t start until Wednesday, Aug. 23, at Clear Creek Amana (CCA), but the ladies of the varsity volleyball squad are already getting an education and learning lessons.
Gone are graduated seniors Sheyanne Koethe, McKenna McCreedy, Alivia Carnahan, Jacquelyn Bunch, Lauren Helle, Hanna Rogge and Mackenzie Justice.
The squad has two seniors this season, Zoe Boehme and Kelsey Lipkea, both returning starters.

CEDAR RAPIDS– Iowa City West High’s golfers haven’t been in their classrooms yet this school year, but already have one meet in the books after competing in the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) Supermeet Thursday, Aug. 10, at the Ellis Golf Course in Cedar Rapids.

New head coach for Women of Troy VB

IOWA CITY– Scott Sanders has seen a lot from the “right chair” over eight years as an assistant coach for the Iowa City West High Women of Troy varsity volleyball team. He worked alongside legendary coach Kathy Bresnahan through State Tournament campaigns and Championships, and during the dark days following the death of Caroline Found. After “Brez” retired from coaching, Sanders worked with Randy Dolson. More trips to state ensued.

High Hopes for Trojan boys XC

IOWA CITY– The West High Trojans cross country squad was the runner-up team in the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) meet and fifth in team standings at the state meet last year. For coach Brian Martz and the boys, neither finish was good enough, and they are looking to improve on both this year.

First Day Of School Aug. 23

School start times:
• 7:55 a.m. for students at Penn (230 N. Dubuque St.), Garner (80 Birch St.) and Van Allen (170 Abigail Ave.) elementary schools.
• 8:10 a.m. for students at North Bend Elementary School (2230 St Andrews Dr.).
• 8:50 a.m. for students at North Central Junior High School (180 E. Forevergreen Rd.) and Liberty High School (1400 S. Dubuque St.).
Crossing guards are stationed at the following intersections, and drivers are required to obey their signals:
• Dubuque and Penn streets;
• Dubuque and Cherry streets;
• Front and Birch streets;

NLCF Treasure hunt ends Sept. 9

NORTH LIBERTY– A treasure hunt, with a grand prize of four tickets to the Sept. 23 Iowa Hawkeyes’ football game versus Penn State (complete with parking pass and tailgate), is set to help raise funds and awareness of the North Liberty Community Fund (NLCF).
Entry fees for the Grow Our Community Treasure Hunt are $25. Participants will visit local businesses to collect stamps on a Community Fund card, from Aug. 1 to Sept. 9. Entering is simple, and you can pick up your entry form and map at Great Western Bank in North Liberty beginning Aug. 1.

Pilot transit program ending Sept. 1

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty’s weekday, intracity pilot bus program will end on Sept. 1. The program saw an average of just 25 trips per month, at an average cost to the city of $224.25 per ride, since its operation began in October 2016. The regular commuter route, in partnership with Coralville Transit, will continue.
The pilot fixed-route service specifically targeted those without cars, and those who can no longer drive, with the goal of helping them reach services in the community, such as the grocery store, Community Center, the doctor’s office and the community pantry.

Join a new type of neighborhood watch

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Police Department is building a neighborhood watch for the 21st Century and is asking for community help. The program is built on voluntary inclusion of a list of residents with exterior security cameras that can record video.
Participation is strictly voluntary and would only be used for crime prevention. Residents who would like to participate can complete a short form and send it to the NLPD’s records division at records@northlibertyiowa.org.
