Iowa City man accused of sexually abusing young girl

NORTH LIBERTY– According to a complaint filed by North Liberty police, an Iowa City man is accused of sexually abusing a young girl.
Trystian James Escher, 20, was allegedly babysitting at a residence in North Liberty in mid-December when the incident took place. The report identifies the victim as a female under the age of 12.

Citywide snowman contest Dec. 1 through Feb. 28

NORTH LIBERTY– Build a snowman in any city park or your yard between Dec. 1 and Feb. 28, take a photo and submit it to Jason Egly at jegly@northlibertyiowa.org along with your name, contact information and where the snowman was built. Entries will be displayed at the North Liberty Community Center and online to be judged by recreation staff.The winning family receives prize!

Hockey night with the Rough Riders Jan. 20 in Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS– It’s a night to spend in Cedar Rapids cheering on the Rough Riders hockey team in a face-off with the Youngstown Phantoms.
Discounted tickets for Friday, Jan. 20, at 7:05 p.m. will be offered to all interested. Individuals must provide their own transportation.
Order tickets at 319-261-GOAL and mention “North Liberty” for the discount. Tickets are $10.75–$16.75, based on zone.

2017 pet tags now available

NORTH LIBERTY– It is now time to purchase your pet tags for 2017. Cats and dogs are required to wear tags that may be purchased at city hall for $2. Owners must provide verification of their pet being spayed/neutered to receive this rate. A nonspayed/nonneutered pet requires a fee of $25.
A tag provides identification in the event a pet is lost. The registration of an animal helps the city to ensure that all animals in the city are up to date with vaccines.
Dogs and cats must be kept on their owners’ property or on a leash at all times. Pets found “at large” will be impounded.

Curbside Christmas tree pick-up Jan. 4 and 11

NORTH LIBERTY– Christmas trees will be picked up curbside on Wednesday, Jan. 4 and 11. Trees must be bare of all decorations or flocking. Do not place trees in plastic bags. Please have trees at the curb by 7 a.m.

Trojans get the best of the Creek Boys

CCA leads through three periods but falls, 58-49

TAMA– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys came close to earning their second win of the season Monday, Dec. 19, on the road in Tama. The Creek Boys held the lead through three quarters of basketball against South Tama, but an 18-point effort by the Trojans in the fourth period capsized and sank the Clippers, 58-49.
CCA won the first period, 19-10, and had a slim 32-28 advantage at halftime. A basket separated the squads at the end of three periods with the Creek Boys up, 42-40.

Iowa Raptor Project family day Jan. 7 at MNRA

SOLON– This month, the Iowa Raptor Project (IRP) at the Macbride Nature Recreation Area will be featuring the American Bald Eagle. The IRP is hosting its monthly family day Saturday, Jan. 7, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 2095 Mehaffey Bridge Rd. NE in Solon.
Bald Eagles are plentiful in Iowa right now, especially near open water. Visit Spirit the Bald Eagle at the Raptor Center and learn all about their keen eyesight and scavenging skills. There will be a scavenger hunt and an “Eagle Eye” notebook craft for recording observations.

T/Th 6:30-7:30 p.m. Is your child interested in joining a swim team but just not sure if they are ready for the competitive level? If so, our new swim team is perfect. Minimum requirements: Must be able to swim one length of the pool freestyle and one length backstroke. Limited number of participants so sign up early. Contact the NLRC for fees and schedule.
Family Fun Fridays at the aquatic center
Families swim at a reduced price. Standard adult supervision rules apply. No swim on March 17 or April 14. Price is for family of four.

NCJH goes 1-2 against Oak Ridge Middle School

MARION– The North Central Junior High (NCJH) eighth grade girls’ basketball team competed against Oak Ridge Middle School (Linn-Mar) Tuesday, Dec. 20, in Marion.
The Knights went 1-2 against the Lions, playing A, B, and C games.
