West’s Women of Troy vanquish Lady Trojans

IC West 63, W’loo East 12

IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy maintained their perfect record in the 2015-2016 season, improving to 6-0 with a 63-12 blowout over the Waterloo East Lady Trojans on Tuesday, Dec. 15, at West High.
While it was an easy win for West, it wasn’t a perfect game.
“Those games are hard to play,” West coach B.J. Mayer said afterward. “I think we kind of thought, maybe, we’re better than them, so sometimes when that happens… you play sloppier, or like you don’t have to concentrate as much.”

CCA Middle School expansion completion pushed back…again

OXFORD— Hopes of moving into Clear Creek Amana’s new middle school addition over the Christmas and New Year break were dashed last week.
Superintendent Tim Kuehl gave the monthly construction update to the school board at its Monday, Dec. 14, meeting in Oxford.
“I was hoping for moving everything over Christmas, which, of course, is not happening,” Kuehl said. The move-in timeframe has been pushed to January.

NORTH LIBERTY– Sometimes, numbers don’t tell the whole story. Sometimes the experience matters more.
At Buford Garner Elementary School, class sizes may be higher than the district’s ideal numbers, but the atmosphere is one of creativity, curiosity, and innovation, said Principal Nick Proud.

Schools for a modern world

SOLON– Students are often asked to study the world as it once was and learn to operate successfully within the world as it currently is. Now, they will be trained how to navigate the world that will be.
This year, the Solon Community School District made a concerted effort to make include “21st century skills” in the curriculum.

Robotics can/bottle drive Jan. 2

SOLON– The Solon Robotics teams will conduct a can/bottle drive on Saturday, Jan. 2, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Students will go door to door asking for any empty containers with a 5¢ deposit to be recycled to raise funds. Can or bottle pickup can be arranged by contacting coach Bill Mattaliano at solonrobotics367@gmail.com. Donations may be dropped off at the robotics room, behind the Solon Middle School auditorium.

Is that you, Santa Claus?

Eight-month-old Lacey Kay Marie Scheib peers intently at the man with the white beard and red suit during Santa’s visit to the Solon Public Library Dec. 7. Scheib was one of nearly 200 children who came to sit on Santa’s lap during the event. Kids were given a candy cane and could also make a scratch art ornament or build a holiday-themed LEGO set.
